sylliravUm..... then why did he add 2 more comments if he didn't like wasting his time? lol
TheBullI do not agree with this review, at all.

it deserves WAY over an 80.
TheBulli know the score was 77, i was remarking that it deserves over an 80. so don't act all smart and tell me that it got a 77.
BrianI agree with the review. The framerate was terrible in some areas. In JK I usually max out my refresh rate at 85fps. There is not on default JK level that I get under that - but this level brought my Geforce to its knees at 10fps in some areas.

I think the architecture needs to be evened out. We know Spiral rocks at architecture, but it should be more consistent - rather than having a few cool looking areas connected by boring hallways, EVERYTHING should be cool.

Also, part of the work of the level designer is to make sure the level plays decently. The frameate in these areas could have been fixed by taking off the glass or just making them a little less complicated. Great level designers are the ones that can find that middle ground between great architecture and great gameplay.
IntimacyI agree with Bull.

If you got a low framerate thats your prob. I had 30's-50's through out the entire game. And once you find all the weapons the game gets off perfectly. And the secret of the Cuncuss is so sweet. Me and Spiral spent 30 minutes fighting over the d!mn thing.

The only problem I had with the level was that I can never come out with a positive score. Every one I play the level with ends up in the negative score range. We always push each other in the lava.

Any ways the level has some of the most advanced/realistic GEO I have seen in years.
Yes some of the rooms were boxy but thats becuase how often in REAL life do you see a building without squares?

Its called realistic editing.
Anubis_OrrWell it's not just MY problem Intimacy, I was playing with people who also experienced the same thing, and I can say that I have a GREAT video card. Of course the lower the settings the better the framerate (most of the time)
LightsideIntimacy, words fail me from what you said. If the framerate is low, that's their prob? Oy, you should be a little more considerate. I agree with Brian, what he said brought back the memories of when I tested out this level. I only seen 2-3 things of eye candy. Only a COUPLE parts of this level seemed to look like Fury 161 from Alien 3. I mean, it's a great level, definately one of the better ones, and I bid Spiral farewell, and I hope he goes on to do what he likes, but hey, this level wasn't like I had hope. I guess my expectations are way too high. :( Sorry, but then again, awesome job, Spiral. Good luck. ;)

IntimacyYou miss read that like I was posting blame on his frame rate.

I was mearly saying a Editor can't create a level to suit everyones machine and sacrifice the quiality of arch. So if it runs slow on his machine that can't be held against the editor, becuase if the level was made on a machine or for machines of higher performance than others the others of course would have bad performance. Its to be expected as knowledge expands.

But perhaps allowing a lower end machine than the creator is using, is unfair for the creator. I mean how would you like it if you made Vampire TMR and had someone with less than the suggested requirements rating it poor becuase it was slow.?

I am not sure of Spiral's system but I am positive its near mine becuase we had fluid game play in the glass bridge.

Now feel free to B!tch me out becuase I expect it.
Anubis_OrrWell I have an 850mhz, with a 32mb video card and right at the moment it doesn't get much higher than that.... :)

But it's not the people who play that level that are always at fault, some areas are just too...... demanding on ANY video card.

Did you get any framerate drop? (Intimacy)
SpiralHey, I agree, I didn't want it to look exactly like Fury 161 from Alien3, if I did, I would have released the Fury 161 level. I was dissappointed at the score of 77. On Laboratory V I got a 70, and I feel that this level was way better than Laboratory V.
BrianOkay, here's the deal. It's the level designers job to create a level that is not only eye-pleasing, but that also runs well on a wide variety of machines. The minimum reqs for JK are a p133 with no 3d card.

I have a PII 466, 128 megs of pc100 RAM, and a 32MB Nvidia GeForce 256 video card. I can run Quake 3 at full detail, 32 bit color, 1024x768 at over 60FPS.

NO LEVEL in JK should bring my card down to 15FPS - that's a flaw in the level design. I mean sheesh, I thought DRAZEN was bad!

Now here's the real issue. I know Spiral is a Kick-Arse level designer. He just needs to keep the target audience in mind. I think that his next map will be infinitely better framerate and gameplay-wise, and I really look forward to it (don't quit foo!).

You also have to understand the limitations of the engine. If you had created that same exact area in a brush based engine like Q2 or Q3, the framerate would have been fine. Why? Because it doesn't have adjoins to deal with... It just takes practice and understanding that can only come from experience...
IntimacyI run on the 1.5 gig prossesor with 64 meg of memory on my vidieo card.
(My new system/server)

The only Time I had a low frame rate 15. was when I ran blindly into the glass walk way area with it being lined with mines. The explosions droped the framerate bad.(For me)

But even on my old 333 p2 machine I ran the level with optimal gameplay.

and I repeat this. I wasn't trying to place blame for bad framerate on the users of the level. I said that It can't be controled by the creator.
"Hey I created something cool. Oh I can't use it those old 133's can't handle it."
Sounds like a draw back an editor shouldn't have to worry about.
GarakIntimacy I am interested to know, who makes your processor? AMD or Intel. It's obviously overclocked, what kind of cooling do you have?

BTW: I am playing on a K6-II 450 Mhz @ 500 Mhz with a 32 Meg Viper II getting a solid 65 fps to 100 fps with no slow down at 1024/768. You might wanna check your video setup Brian, the GeForce line of cards are suppose to be supurb in D3D, second only to the ATi Radeon.
mark5019i personally liked it
IntimacyIts AMD. its one of their new line prosessors. first they released the 1 gig prosessor then the 1.5. Its not overclocked. Not for 15 hundred dollars for the prosessor and 650 for the board. Its cooled by a fan attached to the chipset.

We will put it this way. If I put my startup to boot only off my hard drive not look at my A: or my cd: I boot up in 4 seconds. minus 2 minutes if I have to scandisk my 25 gig drive.
SpiralAlso in the review it said it looked like I used colored Lighting, which can't be done in JK, only MotS. I think I should get some extra points for figuring out how to make this effect.
GarakSorry if I don't believe you, but the fastes processor AMD makes right now is it's 1000 Mhz Athlon Thunderbird.

Unless it's a Kryotec, then I'd have to say your FUS.
Intimacyerr..... I will take a D@amn picture of the thing and post. Or better yet I won't waste my time with that Ill look up the home page for you. Its in my manual somewhere.
Spiralhey, if you wanted to play Fury 161 off of Alien 3, then you shoulda looked for it in the .gob file... This was an accident, and I didn't even know it was there untill Loki told me about it...
BrianGarek I'd like to see a shot of that. Most of the level runs great on my system, it's the place with all the glass and the suspended catwalk - take a picture of this area with your framerate turned on... then fight in that area and take another picture. Honestly, my system runs clean. I have absolutely no background processes running *ever* - I always use the latest video drivers - I have 100% top-quality PCI cards as well, no ISA. I have benched this system against friends machines, and it scores much better than most people's 550.

Anyway, take a picture of the area in question - during a battle, and post it here... make sure the framerate is up there...
bugThat wasn't colored lighting. It was just a well used sector tint. The glass walkway wasn't the only place I got a bad framerate. My framerate also dropped in the area with the pools of molten lead. It was those chains which hang down from the ceiling. Every single link of the chain is cleaved out. The whole chain has got to have something like 1000 faces, yet it is so small I hardly paid any attention to it. That is totally unexcuseable, especially in a DM level. The entire chain could have consisted of 2 mats, it didn't have to be built the way it was.
SpiralWell, sorry bug... I didn't mean to dissappoint you, if I ever make a level again, before I do anything, I will ask myself, what would bug do? how could the chain 3do be inexcusible if I didn't even ask for your forgiveness, I know that sounds cold, but that comment really ****** me off!
NorthChaosBasic deal:

Bad framerates is a bad thing.
Intimacy, you have a point there, that the author doesn't *have* to think about the low-end machines, but then he *can't* whine about bad reviews either if the bad framerates are to blame (notice, this wasn't aimed at anybody, so remember that if you wnat to reply).
SpiralI don't remember anyone whining about anything. I just said I don't agree with the review, that's all...
bug the greatThanks spiral, I would really appreciate it if you would do that. If you have any questions as to what I would do you can email me and I may give you my all great opinion if you are worthy. Ok, so unexcuseable was a bad word to use... just replace that word with "stupid" then. I got a framerate of 6 in that area all because of that stupid chain. It served no purpose and all it did was drag down framerate.
SpiralWell, sorry bug, not all of us can be as good as you... besides, it's my level, and that's the way i wanted it, stupid or not... This will be my last reply though, cause I don't like wasting my time..
Spiralif you don't like the way I make levels, then don't play them..
SpiralBTW, I WILL e-mail you when I want your opinion, so stop posting comments on here...
this is for comments for the review, not the level, there is another place for that...
