Repeater Dance
Author: [Erik Rydeman (SJD)] Reviewer: [jturcio]
- Aesthetics:
- Well let me start by first saying that the music in this level “kicks”. Without it this level would just be one of those “other” levels. While it doesn’t have a battle “theme” to it, the music’s beat works well, and gets the job done of creating a disco atmosphere. It can also be quite fun to listen to while waiting for an opponent. The only problem with it is that you can’t shut it off, but it isn’t much of a problem because the track is quite long (and is also why the file size is so large) and it won’t get to be as annoying as most music is in other mp levels. The architecture in this level is very basic, but it gets the job done. There are two levels to “dance” on and 2 areas along the sides and are filled with a few box 3dos to make things a bit more interesting. The texturing in this level is well done and the author created a few new “disco-like” mats to use that had multiple cells. These “disco” mats were used as the trim for the outer areas of the level and look pretty good except that the mat itself needed a bit more work. The rest of the textures were well chosen and
placed, and I found only a few texture misalignments. The author also creatively used the force destruction mat on the dance floor (see picture 1). The lighting in this level is great, it is not uniformly lit and the author even added a disco strobe light to complete the effect. There were no major CMP errors.
- Gameplay:
- The theme of this level is “To take a life is easy, to keep your own is hard,” as seen during the loading screen and the level emphasizes just that. You start off with 15 health, 5 shield, a repeater, 500 powercells, and your trusty lightsaber. This level is all about “staying alive” (pun), as one shot from the repeater will kill you (most of the time). This makes for interesting battles that usually last, depending on the weapon that is used, a short period of time. Full force battles are not recommended for this level as the lack of health powerups makes it a race to see who can fire destruction, or grip the other person
first, not to mention that using protection would give you an incredibly unfair advantage over the other players. The only powerups that can be found in this level is a grouping of powercells. The placement of these powercells is well though out as they were located inside the bar that is located on one of the sides of the level. So if you need health or shields, your out of luck. The flow in this level is pretty good as well.
- Final Comments:
- This is a good level to have some fun in. If you can handle the 1.6 megabyte download that this level carries, download it. FF enthusiasts might want to look elsewhere as this level simply isn’t meant for it.
