Laboratory IV
Author: [LoC_Spiral] Reviewer: [Andy]
- Aesthetics:
- This author, unlike some, took the time to create new MATs and 3DOs. But the MATs were definitely used WAY too often. There was too much repetitiveness and virtually no flow between different textures. The architecture was not the worst I have seen, but was nothing spectacular. It was boxy in some places. There were some errors in the breakable “dome” above the cave-like, green-water filled area. Some of the surfaces had not been turned to glass, and some of the textures behind the glass were also forgotten. I also found a dflt.mat on the “dome”. The only COGs used were the breaking glass and standard door COGs, not really worth mentioning. The only lighting done in the level pretty much just reduced the overall brightness. There were no special lighting effects. This author probably worked hard on this level, and I hate to put him/her down, but the level just plain sucked, at least in this department
- Gameplay:
- Not bad, but not great. I participated in a short, fast, but unfortunately boring game. The Revive pack and Surges were in good locations, but the powerful weapons were too close together (crossbows, concussion rifle). The frame-rate was low (40 fps), for my computer (a PII-400 with 32mb TNT2, typically 60-75 fps). I never really wasted any time looking for anybody, but any “showdowns” were usually one-sided, because someone would grab all the heavy weapons first. There is a rail detonator, but the level is much too small to use it safely.
- Final Comments:
- This is not a terrible level, but definitely not anything to get excited about. The theme to this level was really good. I would like to see this theme developed into a much worked-over level. Beta testing could have greatly helped this level. I don’t believe this level is really worth downloading.
