Gun Ho
Author: [Gilgamesh] Reviewer: [Kindler]
Aesthetics:
"As he entered the room with his guns a blazin' ..." Gun Ho, a small, Nar Shaddaa look alike level gives a player open spaces to enter into full combat. Although, a sufficient battlefield for any gun battle, this level lacks the creative spark to bring it to the forefront of add on Jedi Knight levels. Lacking custom mats, Gun Ho seems to just be a different part of Nar Shaddaa; gray, red and yellow are the primary colors. Further, the same long drops down tall buildings encircle the battle ground. The placement of mats also degrades from the experience; corners encompass the same Nar Shaddaa gray from the floor to the walls and barriers are aligned with what appears to be caution tape. Architecture also is awfully nondescript. Hard angles and boxy rooms make up this entire level. A ground floor, some ramps and a shallow stairway produce the design. The best part is that this level is designed to be small for fast-paced gun battles. The architecture really accomplishes the goal.
Gameplay:
While the level is full of repeating scenes, this does not diminish the gun play. Packed with big guns and lots of ammo, the small size of this level creates an environment where a game of very few players can get involved in extremely intense gun fights. The downfall is with one rail gun and one concussion rifle, a player left without either just becomes pickens for the other players. Further, large amounts of ammo and big guns easy to grab, this level just becomes a battle of the big guns. There is no risk of getting killed trying to get a gun, nor is there any risk of running out of ammo, leaving the level sterile of further worries other than dodging the opponent.
Final Comments:
I did like the speed of play for this game, everything was fast paced and the scores were high. Unfortunately, the overdone Nar Shaddaa look and boxy sectors takes away from the experience.
