Nomad's Land
Author: [BOSsK] Reviewer: [Brian]
- Aesthetics:
- At first glance, Nomad's Land looks pretty good. The architecture in most of the areas is decent (and the towers pictured in the screenshot at right are very good looking). After playing the level for a while, however, numerous flaws started catching my eye. There are a ton of texture mis-alignments, many so blatanly obvious that it makes me wonder how the author missed them. The rock texture that was used underground is one that can't be tiled vertically, so it looked misaligned as well. There's also an underwater river that has a surface that doesn't scroll with the rest of them. The author used a carpet surface at some of the doorways. It's fine in first person mode, but in 3rd person, it's very disorienting because as you walk though, your view gets completely blocked for a moment. The lighting throughout was pretty decent, although there were some pretty sharp edges every so often.
- Gameplay:
- To be honest, I didn't have much fun playing this level. It's not that there's any one big thing that detracts, it's just a bunch of litthing things that when added up, make for a frustrating experience. There are huge steps throughout the level that you have to jump numerous times to get up. I already mentioned the doorway textures that block the view. The underground river was flowing so fast that it was very difficult to get the items that were in it. I really dislike it when you have to fight the level, rather than the other players. Also in the river, one of the sectors didn't flow with the rest (missing sector thrust). Finally, I was running out towards the horizon and met a completely invisible wall. I think the author should have just made the canyon surround the whole level, rather than make an invisible wall to stop you from going where you're not supposed to. The item placement was pretty decent for the most part, excluding the items in the river, as I mentioned before.
- Final Comments:
- At first glance, I thought this level would be pretty good. After playing it for a bit, I decided that I really didn't enjoy it at all. There are too many little things that make the experience frustrating. I think that if the author spent some more time playtesting and fixing bugs, this level would have been a lot more enjoyable.
