Minas Tirith: The Fortress City
Author: [SlingsRat] Reviewer: [DragonPhinn]
Aesthetics:
Minas Tirith was a great level when it comes to aesthetics. The author showed great effort when making this level, and it paid off. Each area was meticulously designed, and it was often difficult to find boxes or sharp corners. The architecture was great, featuring sloped streets, arches, railings, and other small but noticeable additions. I particularly enjoyed the dungeon area, complete with custom cell door 3do’s. Texturing was decent, although it didn’t quite fit the ambiance of the true LotR city. It featured many metallic walls, electrical displays, and steel pipes; which I didn’t particularly enjoy. There were Sony televisions and a Strip Club which also seemed to deviate greatly from the original theme. Lighting was well done, however, especially deep within the bowels of the castle. Basically a great job on the architecture, although custom textures would have helped the level appear more realistic.
Gameplay:
The gameplay was an oxymoron being both good and bad at the same time. The city was well designed and the author obviously had gameplay in mind. I especially liked the height of the buildings being enough for a force master to reach and scour the rooftops of the city. Most of the areas were interconnected, which provided great chases and ambushes. The downside to the gameplay would probably be the inside areas. Insufficient head and maneuvering room made things difficult to fight in, and even though high powered weaponry was not present, inside fire fights still went to the person with the most firepower. The narrow corridors did not allow players to evade or dodge, so they became arduous point and fire matches. The level will provide a low scoring game, since not only are the high powered guns missing, but there are enough health and shield power ups to keep the fighting dragging on. I rarely found myself near death. In fact, it took 30min to make the first kill (which was done by trapping my opponent in a corridor). Sabering was a bit more fun in this level, but it was obviously not designed for it. We found ourselves fighting mainly in the courtyard, instead of flowing from one area to the next. Basically, an above average job, but I wish that the author put more room on the inside of the fortress.
Final Comments:
It is often difficult to make a level based off a book or movie, like the author has here. Often users will have certain expectations going in, which make it more difficult for the author to accommodate. Especially with such a large LotR following, every reader of the book had a different visual comprehension of what Minas Tirith should look like, and because of this, it makes levels like this that much harder to please readers. Besides that, this level was pretty good, and I recommend it to most people. I hope the author continues to create levels, and I look forward to checking out his future endeavors.
