Ghost Town Invasion
Author: [MightyBob] Reviewer: [Spider AL]
Aesthetics:
Now, it's easy to fall into the trap of dismissing a level's good qualities because it lacks something in the visual department. To me, architecture has always been secondary to good flow and gameplay. Regardless of this, it must be said that Ghost Town Invasion is comprised of architecture which is far from aesthetically pleasing. The structures are boxy, the textures are uniform and drab. There is no lighting to speak of. Without flair in any of these areas, the atmosphere of the level is non-existent. Sound is also sparingly used. There's a waterfall sound around a waterfall (which does not scroll) but that's about it, and when one moves outside the sectors immediately surrounding the water, the sound disappears. All these are the usual errors which plague most authors during their first attempts at levels. They are mistakes, to be sure, but a good editor learns from his or her mistakes, so I'd encourage MightyBob to continue practising and creating until he has overcome such initial mishaps.
Gameplay:
It's tricky to review Ghost Town Invasion on its gameplay, as almost all the positive gameplay in the level is provided by the 'Invasion' cogs written by Cave_Demon, who has released them to the public. The invasion cogs reproduce the gameplay of Unreal Tournament's 'Domination' mode, in which players on a team fight to capture and defend key areas or 'Control Points.' This concept is also notably present in Half Life's Team Fortress Classic mod. Usually fast and furious, this style of play relies on flow and evenly matched armaments to provide maximum fun. Ghost Town however provides no flow, and item placement is dubious. There are few weapons to be had and less ammunition, and since the author has restricted the players to No Force by cog, games are slow and uneven even with four players, as the level is too large to traverse quickly. Having said this, it's obvious even to this reviewer that the author intended the level to be used with a mod of some description, probably Spork, or a Manowars type mod. I therefore tested the level with those mods, and the gameplay improved considerably. Without the added attraction of a mod though, the level remains static and slow, with no special effects, and no cog effects other than the Invasion cogs. I haven't felt justified in awarding a good score in dynamics, as there were some minor errors in the implementation of those cogs.
Final Comments:
This level suffers from a lack of character. What good points it has are derived from Cave_Demon's cogs, so I believe the message for MightyBob is to keep editing, hopefully eventually to produce something really good. Until then, I wouldn't advise anyone to download Ghost Town Invasion unless they're a confirmed Spork or Ninja Kage addict.
