Stone
Author: [Imajedi] Reviewer: [inpheaux]
Aesthetics:
This was another of the levels submitted to the most recent Massassi level contests. Sadly, it appears to have been rushed, and the area it affected was Aesthetics. The architecture was severely detailed, and made good use of the small space the level took up. Textures were superb, mostly using rather recently released mats from Graphtallica and The Big Giant Head. These new mats not only go well together, but also fit well with the normal LEC textures that Imajedi used. Lighting is where the level hurts, it was completely default lighting. First off, this ruins the mood. Secondly, it makes the textures far too sharp, thusly taking something that could have looked perfect, and making it look painful. I'd *really* like to see Imajedi re-release this level with lighting, but I'll continue the review nonetheless.
Gameplay:
Gameplay was somewhat odd in Stone. I'll address the level from the aspects of different force levels because this is essentially two completely different levels depending on how much force is used. With full force, flow is a non-issue, since you can get essentially anywhere in no time. The gameplay tends to center on the upper levels, around where all the items are. The item placement creates a problem since lined around the upper wall are two force surges, a weapon charge, some force boosts, and an armoured vest. This makes FF games significantly imbalanced. No-Force games on the other hand are slow paced and centered on the ground level only. In NF games, only a few basic powerups are available. Gameplay ends up being faster and significantly more balanced in a NF game because of this. Due to the size of the level, I'd suggest a small number of players, since it's kinda cramped even with two.
Final Comments:
Overall, Stone is truly unfinished. It seems somewhat unfair to review it as is, because the lighting could change the feel of the level so dramatically. It's still a rather good level, and worth the download if you'd like a rather small and fast-paced dueling level.
