Sky Station
Author: [ThreeDee] Reviewer: [inpheaux]
- Aesthetics:
- Sky Station has rather good aesthetics for a level obviously geared towards pure deathmatch. The set of textures ThreeDee chose to use fit the level perfectly, using rusted metals and aged walls. There were only a few minor problems with textures, a few misaligned textures in the lower dome, and one area in the corners of the hallways which didn't fit. Luckily, these errors are not very noticeable. Architecture was solid throuout the level. ThreeDee encorporated some rather nice large arches along the perimeter hallways, which gives an overall solid feeling to the level. Lighting is consistant in Sky Station, nothing special, but it doesn't detract from the feel of the level.
- Gameplay:
- This is where Sky Station really shines. The flow of the level is perfect, with four ways to get into the main centre room, and two ways to get in and out of lower room. Weapons, ammunition, sheilds, and powerups can be found along the walls, usually neatly tucked next to the arches. The only problems I had with the item placement is the choice to include powerups such as a revive, a weapon powerup, and a sheild vest, and then to have them in high traffic areas. However, these powerups can somewhat be understood, since the number of encounters with another player is high due to the small size of the level. One of the only other problems i had with the level, was with the tubes used to gain access to the lower area: occasionally, a player can get stuck on their way back up through the tube to the original level. This makes the player an immobile target, in the middle of a high-traffic area. This could have been prevented by making a one-way force field over the opening, but it really isn't that big of a problem.
- Final Comments:
- Sky Station is one of the best levels I've downloaded in quite awhile. It may not have the most eye candy as some other levels out there, but the gameplay is so versatile that it makes up for it. Sky Station could be played well with essentially any level of force, any number of people, and any speed computer. Because of these aspects, it is by far a must-have.
