Amplitheater

- Aesthetics:
- Amphitheater is full of aesthetics, from torches to realistic rain effects and associated mats. The lighting only accentuates the feeling of a temple (or in this case an amphitheater in the rain). There were a few places that were totally dark which, in my opinion, if you have to turn on anything to see a surface or area than its just too dark. Especially, in this case, since the areas around the dark spots in this level are lit brightly enough that the light would reach these areas. The architecture is very good with a few exceptions. The stairs in the amphitheater (first picture) need to be jumped up which makes saber dueling a bit more difficult if you happen to be in that area. The hall area is nice but if you look at it the wrong way you’ll get a HOM effect (in that second picture, if I moved my camera up a bit the walls would become “unattached” and creates the HOM effect). Of course the architecture isn’t architecture without mats and the mat usage in this level is great. However there was a good number of mis-aligned mats which could easily have been corrected, for example in that second picture the floor mat right in front of you is mis-aligned to the mats on either side of it. There were many positives in this level however, one of the most noticeable is the statues and torches that are everywhere. The
black statues show many different fighting poses and are interesting to look at, and while the torches flame only contains about 2 to 4 frames gets the job done. Another interesting aspect of this level is that the author placed a puddle in the main hall (second picture) with water dripping from the ceiling, all I have to say is that it was a great effect and one that should be noticed by “newbie” editors when thinking about adding detail in their levels. Also all of the windows that look outside of the complex have a scrolling rain mat which completes the effect along with the rain (which sounds rather peaceful at times) and thunder which occasionally accompanies the effect. However don’t walk outside as you die instantly if you touch the ground in the amphitheater area, and will end up falling into a
pit, if you walk out the windows in the halls. There is one thing about those windows in the halls and that is that if you look out of them you see nothing but sky and if you use the third person camera and try looking at the building below the window line, you’ll see only sky. This damages the effect as it takes away from the realism of the temple in some respects. Whoa that was long, I congratulate you if you read all that.
- Gameplay:
- For any standard sabers level you can usually make up the gameplay as you go along based on the architecture present. The architecture makes sabering in this level interesting depending on where you are. The stairs in the main hall make for interesting duels as well as provide and nice touch to the area. However the stairs in the amphitheater are a bit more difficult as you’ll have to jump to get up them which makes it harder to escape the area. In between the main hall and the amphitheater is an area with columns where saber duels could be interesting if your playing a game of cat and mouse. Item placement in this level was pretty good. There was only one force surge and it was a dark surge. In my opinion you need to make the level appealing to both types of force wielders and thus should include a light surge somewhere just to balance gameplay out. Other than the single dark surge there were a few health packs and bacta tanks laying around which is good because a few is all that is needed in a sabers level. There were no shields but as to whether that is good or bad is a matter of opinion in a sabers level. One or two is fine but they are never absolutely needed. The flow of this level is pretty good although with only two directions two go in how much flow can there really be. The framerate stayed very consistent and even with the hardly noticeable HOM bug, the levels playabilty was very good.
- Final Comments:
- Barring the errors, this is a good download if you are a fan of sabering, and if you are a beginning editor that needs some good ideas on how to improve your own levels. Gunners need not apply, as this level will most likely not suit your tastes.
