Temple Of Ishraa Ni
Author: [NJF_Chewie (Stuart Coggins)] Reviewer: [jturcio]
Aesthetics:
The architecture in this level was decent, ranging from a “sleeping” area (picture 1), to a ball room style hall, to another area. The texturing in this level was ok. It consisted of many new textures which all looked pretty good, with the exception of one mat which tiled horribly. One of the few bugs in the level is that the author forgot to set the sector cmp of most of the areas in the level, leaving those users without a 3d accelerator in a psychedelic wonderland. Also in the other main sabers area, past the ballroom, I found a geo set to 4 (middle of the second picture to the right), no biggie but something that should have been caught during the beta testing phase along with the previously mentioned cmp error. The lighting in this level was poor. While not full lit, as in other levels I’ve reviewed, the author didn’t take into account that lighting has to come from somewhere in a level. That said, there was a few areas that were lit in such a way as to make you wonder where the lighting was coming from. There were also a few areas where no lighting was present. I personally can’t say that I like it but if the author wants it that way that is fine. This level had nothing really new in the dynamics area so I can’t comment on it.
Gameplay:
This level’s gameplay isn’t very good at all. First of all there are way too many powerups. Normally I’d say it’s “in the eyes of the beholder,” but in this level, a sabers level, there should be at most one to four shield, and of course never a full shield. That same full shield was placed right in the center of the main ball room in a well and was very easily accessed. That said the item placement in this level wasn’t very good either. All of the items were spread out, but since there were so many it didn’t make a difference. The flow was pretty good. The gameplay of course suffered from the number of items. I played through the level for 10 minutes and the only score change occurred when someone fell off the balcony area that is in-between the main ballroom and the area in the second picture.
Final Comments:
I can’t recommend the download with this level. While the architecture is nice in some places, the gameplay is just horrible all around. For future reference when making saber levels, remember the fewer the powerups, generally the better.
