Dead Reckoning
Author: [Christian Garris] Reviewer: [SL_Ric_Olie]
Aesthetics:
When the author said that this was a large level in the description, he wasn’t kidding. However, the level is large because it is vastly spread out. There are large, open areas that I think could have been compressed with little loss in game play. The architecture was fair. Aside from the large amount of wide-open spaces, there was some creativity in the architecture. Texturing was also about average. There were several misalignments and repetitive textures used. Also, I noticed several mis-flagged surfaces. Lighting was well done. The contrast between dark and light was appropriate to all the different areas. In the dynamics category, there were a few extras. Some new mat animations, 3dos, pivoting doors, and our good friend 8t88 were included.
Gameplay:
The game play of the level was an improvement from the aesthetics. This isn’t the average Go-In-Shoot-Stuff-Get-Out™ level. I found some of the puzzles quite interesting and difficult. It took me several tries to figure out where certain areas you had to get into were, and then I found myself going back to the same place to solve another puzzle. Because the level was so spread out, it did decrease the flow from one area to the next. Most enemies were well placed, though there was one hangar-type area with lots of Grans. Weapons were mostly limited to what you could pick off your enemies, so you had to constantly be alert. At one point, I found that you couldn’t get on top of a certain pipe without force jump or a grappling hook. But overall, game play was good.
Final Comments:
In closing, this level should be downloaded if you like puzzles. The level is quite spread out, so it takes a while to complete. There is not much in the way of shooting lots of things, but the puzzles prove challenging enough to play the level a couple times through.
