Remnants of the Empire Part 1: The Asteroid Base
Author: [SavageX] Reviewer: [Home_Sliced]
- Aesthetics:
- There are levels, and then there is the Remnants of the Empire (ROTE) series by SavageX. If you have been playing JK add-ons for any amount of time, you are probably familiar with SavageX’s work. Just so there is no confusion, this review is ONLY for the first level in the series, not the whole series. Aesthetically speaking, “The Asteroid Base” is a solid level. Neither the architecture nor texturing is overly amazing, although there are a few areas that stick out. Similarly, the lighting is functional and diverse, but not incredible. Everything fits together well resulting in a good looking level. The dynamic aspects of the level, on the other hand, are very good. There is a new, fully functional weapon (namely the Assault Cannon) that I found to be a lot of fun (and bug-free I might add). The level also includes the standard doors, elevators, and a few other surprises that keep things interesting. An all around good level aesthetically.
- Gameplay:
- The aesthetics were good, but in my humble opinion the gameplay is even better. This is a fun, action filled shoot-em-up level. There are a few fairly easy puzzles to keep your brain from turning to mush, but for the most part this is a “blast anything that moves” kind of level. Normally this type of gameplay would not score very high in my book, but SavageX does it so well that the level earns high marks. Perhaps the reason for the enjoyable gameplay lies in the excellent item and enemy placement. There was always just about the right amount of ammo to take on the opposition as you make your way through the base. Speaking of which, this level flows together extremely well giving the feeling of an actual base with twists and turns rather than the standard linear layout. If gameplay is your top priority, this is a “must have” level.
- Final Comments:
- A great starting level in the series. You have to download the whole series at once, which I would have recommended anyway, so go and get to the downloading. You will enjoy this level.
