Invasion of the Sol System, Episode 1
Author: [Kyle90] Reviewer: [DragonPhinn]
- Aesthetics:
- For a first shot at a level, Mars shows true in a number of places, however the aesthetics still came out a little inconsistent. Sometimes the author would show great ability, especially excelling at outdoor architecture and some knowledge of dome construction and pillar additions. Other times, the author would leave rooms exceptionally boxy and unattractive. Texturing was bland, but showed effort. They flowed together nicely, nothing stood out greatly. There were many misalignments and a few default textured surfaces. Lighting showed great effort, although I found myself running low on the batteries due to a very dark atmosphere. This, however, added to the level in it’s own respect. Aesthetic dynamics weren’t terribly noticeable, predominantly from the low-gravity. All in all a good effort, although extra work could have made this level truly stand out.
- Gameplay:
- Gameplay was also a bittersweet area for this level. There weren’t many power ups in the level, and I found myself desperately needing more health and shields. The munitions supplies were based mostly off the items dropped by your enemy, which limited my firepower to mainly the storm trooper rifle. There was a large salvo of Conc’s in one area, which pulled me through a quarter of the game. The low gravity threw everything off for me, but I think that it was a fun change of pace. My “hang” time increased greatly, which made it fun to leap over storm troopers unleashing a storm of blaster fire. Still, there were too many enemies in too tight quarters. After the first fire-fight in the level, I had no shields and forty health. To make matters worse, the next fight consisted of six or seven troopers in a tiny bunker. In short, the author made the difficulty just a little much, although some may welcome the challenge. More items would have been appreciated for the rest of us. As far as objectives were concerned, the author pretty much fudged it by giving you “Objective Completed” messages, although there were no Objectives listed. I didn’t really know what I was doing through most of the level, but it was pretty much straight forward, so I didn’t have much trouble.
- Final Comments:
- If you like single player levels, this will probably be worth your time. I really enjoyed a lot of the areas, especially the AT-ST graveyard. The low gravity provided an interesting mix to the level, but some may struggle with the lack of weaponry and power ups.
