Jedi Search, Firro Imperial Base, Part 1
Author: [Ryan Briggs] Reviewer: [Home_Sliced]
- Aesthetics:
- Reviewers Note: There are actually two versions of this level: the original and an enhanced version that comes with level 2 in the series. This review is based on the enhanced version.
This is one of the older single player levels out there; a “classic” if you will. You fill the boots of Kyle Katarn as he searches for a Jedi being held captive in an Imperial base. Architecturally speaking, the level is solid, but not spectacular. It seems as if the author concentrated his efforts in a few areas, but left large poorly detailed open areas without much thought. Lighting is a mixed bag. The natural area at the beginning of the level is wonderfully done, but many other areas are bland and uniformly lit. Texturing, which consisted of a few natural textures mixed in with the standard imperial base décor, is decent by today’s standards. There are a few misaligned textures here and there, but nothing that destroys the level’s atmosphere. This level covers all “the basics” when it comes to dynamics: there are a few elevators, several doors, three slashable grates, a waterfall, and a river. Nothing jumps out at you about the level aesthetically, but it is solid all around.
- Gameplay:
- Haven’t I played this level before? Not much stands out about this level in the gameplay department. A typical assault on an Imperial base by our favorite hero Kyle Katarn. (To be fair, this is an older level hence the concept was “more original” at the time.) There are plenty of enemies to keep you busy, but you are never overwhelmed. Even on the hardest setting, it is not a difficult level to beat. Item placement is a little on the heavy side especially considering a revive/armor vest combo in a secret area near the end. One of these power-ups needs to go as it makes the rest of the level painfully easy. The layout is straightforward and serves its purpose. There are a few passages that are “off the beaten path” towards the beginning that may require a little bit of searching, but other than that, there are no frustrating aspects to the level. There are no framerate or HOM problems and the level is clean of bugs on my machine.
- Final Comments:
- If you have never played this level before, I’d recommend you check it out. It may be old, but it still has some fun in it.
