The Siege at Vol Kanst
Author: [Jason Burton] Reviewer: [Home_Sliced]
Aesthetics:
You see that little link on this page that reads, “Download.” Move your mouse over to it and click it. If you are not blessed with a fast net connection, then you can finish reading my review, otherwise, forget the review and go play this level. This is possibly the best single player add-on for Jedi Knight. “Could I possibly hype this level anymore,” you say. Oh yes, just read on. We begin with a quick briefing and cutscene outlining the plight of our favorite hero Kyle Katarn who has another run in with the Empire in the Adegan System. The Empire is assaulting the New Republic base at Vol Kanst and they need help. Your mission is to find your trapped counterparts and open access for them to the medical wing. “So what do this all have to do with aesthetics?” you might ask. One word: atmosphere. This level reeks of it. There are explosions, warning messages, furniture cluttered about, sparks, chunks of wall blocking passages, and so much more. Almost everything aesthetically related to the level makes you feel like the base is actually under attack. The architecture varies between good and excellent with only a hint of boxiness in several isolated areas. Texturing compliments the architecture with perfection, although it is slightly repetitive in some areas. The lighting meshes with the architecture and texturing as few levels have been able to. All said and done, this level comes together in a way few levels can duplicate. The results are wonderful visuals and an unmatched atmosphere.
Gameplay:
This is a fun level to play. The author definitely put in some originality and creativity into the level. There are some fairly unique mission objectives which adds new flare to the same old key hunt found in many levels. Items are dispersed well throughout the level and always in logical areas. Enemies consist mostly of the standard stormtroopers, but there are a few surprises thrown in. The enemy placement is excellent and you will often find yourself being shot at from two or more directions. The result is a level that is not easy to beat, especially the first time through. Replay value is decent, although the level is surprisingly quick to play after some practice. A great feature of this level is that it caters to both saberists and gunslingers alike. There are a variety of weapons and force powers perfect for mowing down the opposition. As an added bonus, this level has some well hidden secret areas. See if you can find them all (put JED away you cheater)! There is definitely no lack of solid gameplay in this level.
Final Comments:
Unless you are an MP purist, you definitely need to download this level. On second thought, download this level even if you are an MP purist, I think you will enjoy it anyway. Oh, and one more thing for editors to keep in mind: this level was created in 28 days.
