Dark Emperor
Author: [Luke Skywalker] Reviewer: [Home_Sliced]
Aesthetics:
I vaguely remember playing this level a long, long time ago. After playing it again, I remember why it didn’t stay on my hard-drive. The architecture is very boxy almost everywhere. The classic “perfectly rectangular room with lots of 3dos in it” is used throughout the first two levels. The last two levels, both of which are short saber levels, have slightly better architecture in them. Texturing is boring and repetitive throughout the entire pack. On top of that, there are several bad stitching errors that could easily be fixed. Lighting is very uniform in most areas, although several areas are nicely shaded. I know the author is capable of making better visuals because several areas, particularly the beginning of the second level, look very good.
Gameplay:
How many times do we have to kill Jerec? He is dead. Conveniently enough for this story line, a Jedi resurrection chamber brings Gorc, Pic, Maw, Yun, and Jerec back to life and lets you face all 5 at once. Not so fast, though. First you have to wade through two levels of Grans, Greedos, and Tuskens to reach the battle ground for the third level. In this level you and Saris face off against Luke Skywalker and Max the Rabbit. Only after that can you finally proceed to lay the smack down on the 5 resurrected Jedi. I’m not even going to start into how bad this plot is. A tip for level editors: don’t use anything remotely related to this plot. That said, the gameplay, while grossly unoriginal, was marginally entertaining. I found myself playing almost the entire pack with the saber, although the first two levels could easily be played with guns. A full arsenal of powerful, dark-side powers are at your disposal to crush your enemies as any Dark Emperor should. There were no puzzles to solve, and only a few keys to find. You were fighting from start to finish.
Final Comments:
If you like saber duels and can stand to wade through two levels of Grans and Tuskens, you might enjoy the two ending saber battles. Otherwise, I would look elsewhere for your SP entertainment.
