Dark Emperor II: The Last of the Jedi
Author: [Darth Maul] Reviewer: [Home_Sliced]
Aesthetics:
Where to begin? Nothing about this level pack is remarkably good, but on the other hand, there is nothing that is incredibly bad about it either. I’ll save the plot analysis for later because it affects the gameplay a lot more than the aesthetics. Taken as a whole, visuals ranged from mediocre to good. Everything about this level is mixed in quality and mixed together. There are quite a few rooms that deviate from the standard rectangle, but they are void of any detail and almost uniformly lit. When a series of beams or pillars is put in, the texturing is out of place and the lighting doesn’t blend in. The author needed to spend more time refining the level with aesthetic details. In all fairness, there were a few extras thrown in like spoken dialogue and several decent cutscenes that add to the dynamics of the level, but this doesn’t excuse the mediocre architecture, texturing, and lighting.
Gameplay:
The plot is confusing in more ways than one. Several of the specifics are not really believable and contradict some things from the EU, but hey, who cares about the EU ;-). The major drawback about the plot was the atrocious grammar. There are people out there who will proof read things for you (like me for instance). I spent more time wincing at the “creative” sentence structure rather than getting into the game. The pure gameplay aspects are marginally better than the aesthetics, but not by much. Item placement is somewhat half-hazard and lacks creativity (all the pickups are on the floor). Enemy placement is equally uninspired and generally consisted of large groups of stormtroopers clustered together. The layout of all the levels is very linear, but the author does take advantage of all 3 dimensions in several areas in order to connect rooms together. There is certainly nothing new about the gameplay or mission objectives. Despite these shortcomings, there are still several fun and even a little bit challenging areas to deal with.
Final Comments:
If you enjoy SP levels or saber duels, I would give this level pack a try. If not, there are better levels out there.
