The New Empire
Author: [Chris Swan] Reviewer: [Home_Sliced]
- Aesthetics:
- If you are looking for a level pack with stunning visuals that will cause instant, uncontrollable drooling, you need to look elsewhere. As with many single player levels, the aesthetics in this pack range from good to downright ugly. Included in the episode are an intro cutscene and three small to medium sized levels for your enjoyment. The architecture in the first level is frankly quite bad. There is little detail and almost every room is the classic “box with 3dos in it.” The second level offers some improvement, but not much. The third level shows a marked improvement over the first two with some nice detail touches. Texturing is very repetitive in most places throughout all the levels and there are only a handful of misalignment errors. Lighting, much like the architecture, improves throughout the pack, especially in the third level. Dynamically, this level is quite good. The intro cutscene is well done and sets up the story as it should. The author uses the basic elevators, doors, waterfalls, and switches very well and there are a few quick, innovative puzzles. The thing that impresses me the most, is the improvement in visuals as you play through the pack. I’d watch out for this author’s next release, I think it will show a great improvement in the aesthetic areas.
- Gameplay:
- Despite the mediocre aesthetic qualities, the gameplay is actually quite good. The first thing you will notice is the fairly original and well thought out plot. There is a bunch of info in the read me, so give it a look before you play. Your mission involves infiltrating a bounty hunter’s base and retrieving information about the Empire’s next scheme to over throw the galaxy. There are a few twists and turns in the plot as you play, but I won’t give those away. There are several fairly original puzzles that are even a bit challenging as well. Unfortunately, there are also several places where you can get stuck and must resort to the cheat codes to fly out. Item placement is well done in most areas with power-ups located on shelves or near boxes. Enemies were also placed strategically: many behind boxes or above/below you. You might even enjoy playing this one again.
- Final Comments:
- There are plenty of things that could be improved upon in this pack, but the basic foundation is there. You might want to check this one out if you have some extra time. If the author’s skills continue to improve as they did throughout this episode, I would watch out for this author’s next release…
