Aesthetics:
This level has a lot going for it in the aesthetics department, but there are unfortunately several architectural bugs that hinder the realism of the level. In addition, the plot has little detail and is almost superfluous except for the location: a moisture farm. The architecture itself is well done with plenty of detail scattered throughout the level. To add to the realism of the level, the author served up a large helping of 3dos and non-playable characters. While the placement of these “extras” is commendable, they are over used in several areas to the point of making it difficult to walk. The bugs that I spoke of earlier consisted of several improperly flagged floors along with several HOM errors from improperly flagged walls. Another detractor from the atmosphere of the level is the mediocre texturing. A wide variety of textures are used so the environments are never boring, but the texture choices and their application are lacking. The texturing and architecture seem at odds instead of working together. Lighting, on the other hand, is quite good throughout the entire level. The author even used sector tints to highlight several areas. This level encompasses the bare bones when it comes to dynamics including several doors and elevators.
Gameplay:
If you are up for a challenge, this is a level for you. I found myself saving often, and almost always low on health and shields. Ammo must be conserved like a greedy wamprat or you will be finished off in a flash. Other than weapons taken from your fallen foes, I found a total of seven powerups in the entire level, four of which are at the very beginning. This is not a level for the fool-hearty. Enemy placement contributed to the difficulty with large numbers of well placed enemies hiding around almost every corner. One thing that I did not like was the absence of the saber. The entire level would be more enjoyable compounded by the fact that you face a Dark Jedi at the end. Having barely managed to make it to the end with any ammo, facing a dark Jedi with 50 energy, 30 power, and 4 rail charges isn’t my idea of fun. Nevertheless, this is a good level with a solid 45 minutes of gameplay. Provided you save often, that is.
Final Comments:
The gunners out there might want to give this one a try, but saberists will want to look elsewhere. If you’re a newer editor, check out the good use of sector tinting at the beginning of this level.
