Imperial Siege on Derra IV
Author: [Ryan Bickhart] Reviewer: [Home_Sliced]
Aesthetics:
If I didn’t know any better, I would say the author of this level worked for LEC. Both the style and design of the level are very reminiscent of several of the original LEC levels. The architecture is an excellent mix of form (very little boxiness) and function (high framerate virtually everywhere). The main control room at the end of the level is one of the best rooms I have ever seen in Jedi Knight. To compliment the stellar architecture, the author uses a great variety of textures aligned and scaled with perfection. Lighting is a little bland in a few areas, but is very well done for the most part. The dynamics of this level are top notch. The author uses elevators, doors, forcefields, sector thrusts, breakable glass, and a host of other features. These extras aren’t merely here for looks, however. Almost everything is incorporated into a puzzle of some sort which adds a ton to the gameplay as well as the atmosphere.
Gameplay:
Leave yourself a hefty chunk of time when you start up this level because it will take you awhile to finish. I became so engrossed in the level at several points that I forgot I was supposed to be taking screenshots. You may have a little trouble finding several passages your first time through, but there is a walkthrough available. I found that everything connects together very well making you feel as if you are actually inside an Imperial base. As you would expect, guarding the base is a large assortment of stormtroopers, commandos, and officers. Your ammo supply will come almost entirely from these enemies so don’t waste your ammo. Shield powerups could have been spread out more; three armor vests offer large boosts that make surrounding areas too easy. On top of everything else, the level sports a sound, yet simple plot that actually makes sense! This is definitely a level you will be playing again, and again, and again, and again…
Final Comments:
Download it now! This is, in my opinion, the best user made single player level for Jedi Knight out there right now. Enjoy it because it’s not often a level of this high quality comes out.
