Operation: Fortra
Author: [Jensyx] Reviewer: [Home_Sliced]
Aesthetics:
Overall, the aesthetics of this level are well above average, but they are not quite LEC quality. There are 5 fully playable levels plus a small intro level with no enemies in it. The architecture is very good throughout the whole pack, and as a bonus, is quite diverse as well. A few isolated areas are a little boxy, but the author did include plenty of detail. Texturing falls a little short of the architecture's quality. There are a few new mats, one of which doesn’t tile very well. In addition, there are several misalignment errors and the selection is a little bland in places. Lighting is very good for the most part, however several areas are brightly uniformly lit and others have no lighting at all. Dynamics are hit or miss. There are some nice extras like spoken dialogue and a movable crate which is used wonderfully in a quick little “puzzle.” Unfortunately, a few of the levels' puzzles don’t work. In the third level, a problem with spawning keys forces you to use the cheat “wamprat” in order to obtain all the keys. There is also a problem at the end of the fourth level with a door not opening forcing you to use the cheat “Thereisnotry” to move on to the next level. I have been told these bugs occur on some machines and not others. This level should have been beta tested on a wider variety of machines to remove the bugs for everyone.
Gameplay:
You play as Kyle Katarn as he hunts down a ruthless Imperial Lieutenant Commander Marton Fortra who is Captain of the ISD Valeiax. The readme contains a lot of background information, so give it a look before you play. The plot is not wholly unbelievable, but there are a few “bugs” in it. Explaining these would take more room than I have here, and would cause me to drone on and on like I’m doing right now. As such, you can do your own plot check, and I’ll stick to analyzing the gameplay. Item pickups of any sort, other than ammo from your fallen foes, come strictly from secret areas. In addition, you start with 10 health and 10 shields so you must be cautious from the start. The levels are all fairly linear; it’s just a matter of finding the often well hidden path. Several of the levels boil down to key or button hunts which are a little monotonous and frustrating. The biggest problems are the bugs in two of the puzzles which really distract from the gameplay and realism of their respective levels.
Final Comments:
If it weren’t for the bugs, this level would earn a much higher score. If you can stand using the cheats in levels three and four, you will probably enjoy the rest of the pack.
