The Search for Leia
Author: [Anthony Piggott] Reviewer: [Home_Sliced]
- Aesthetics:
- This is certainly not a level pack you would download for its looks. Architecture is boxy throughout all 8 levels. The only thing keeping areas completely devoid of detail are the heavily used 3dos. The lighting makes it look better than the classic “box with 3dos in it,” but levels need more diversity from beams, pillars, arches, sloped surfaces, or other architectural extras. Texturing is quite bland as there are often only 3 or 4 textures adorning a large area. There are only a handful of misalignment errors, which is a big plus. Lighting is good in most areas. There are a few pitch black areas (I really don’t like those if you don’t have a saber), and a handful of uniformly lit rooms, but the author definitely put some thought into the lighting. This level pack comes with quite a few extras including several new 3dos, a few new skins, a new weapon model, quite a few cutscenes, and even a handful of new cogs. Much like the architecture, however, they could be used more effectively and creatively.
- Gameplay:
- Ahhhh, its LucasFilm’s worst nightmare! The whole motley crew is back: Luke, Leia, Han, Lando, C-3P0, Chewie, and even a few bad guys you’ll recognize. But wait, that’s not all! This time they tangle with Jerec, and two worlds collide. There is a reason why the characters from the original trilogy were completely left out of the DF series, and, in my opinion, it should stay that way. Leave LucasFilm’s beloved, registered, cash-cow milking characters alone, and come up with some original ones on your own. That said, these levels have some decent gameplay in them. Item placement is excellent and you will be stretched for ammo at a few points, but never helpless. Enemy placement, on the other hand, is not nearly as good. There are several well placed enemies, but for the most part, your foes were just standing around waiting to be vaporized. This is a very, very linear series of levels. There is really only one place where you must go several directions to complete a mission objective; everything else is laid out one after the other. You will be tested in almost every style of gameplay including a saber duel, plenty of gunslinging, and even a fist fight.
- Final Comments:
- This is a very average level. If you insist on quality aesthetics, this is not a level for you. If gameplay is all you care about, load this bad boy up and give it a try. There’s about an hour to an hour and a half of solid gameplay to be had.
