Pride of the Empire Part 1
Author: [EvanC] Reviewer: [Home_Sliced]
Aesthetics:
If there is one thing you remember about this level, it will be the incredible natural architecture. You begin the level perched on the top of a canyon, your comrades dead around you, and your shuttle mangled far beyond repair. Great atmosphere to start a level! Unfortunately, everything aesthetically related to the level goes downhill from here (true and bad pun). The beginning of the level displays top notch architecture, solid texturing, and decent lighting. By the end of the level, the architecture is quite boxy, the texturing is bland and repetitive, and the lighting is dull and uniform. I have the feeling this level may have been rushed to completion. The level also has several unique dynamic aspects that give it some flare despite the mediocre aesthetics near the end. As a bonus, this level also includes a fair amount of extras including several docile canyon dwellers, several new enemies, and a host of new 3dos.
Gameplay:
Much like TIE Fighter in comparison with X-Wing, this level offers the player a chance to try the other side. You take on the role of a young stormtrooper named Janus who, after a near fatal shuttle crash, happens upon a rebel base with some particularly interesting information that Imperial Intelligence would love to know about. Your weapons include the standard issue E-11 Stormtrooper Rifle, a trusty bryar pistol, and of course your fists. Ammo is a little on the heavy side and I was never in a bind even on the hardest difficulty. Shield and health placement will make sure you keep on your toes, especially towards the end of the level. Enemy placement was decent, but mostly resorted to stacking large pockets of troops in key areas (also true and another bad pun). All in all, this is a fun level to play, there are no bugs, and it is an original idea. Solid all around.
Final Comments:
Download this one just to have a look at the canyon architecture. There’s about 45 minutes of solid gameplay here.
