Installing and Running Custom Maps/Mods
|
|
This area is designed to teach you how to install and run the custom maps and mods that can be downloaded from the files section.
Step 1: Get WinZip
Most of the files released here are "zip" files. This means that they are compressed archives that actually contain more than one file. In order to uncompress or "unzip" them, you will need a program such as WinZip. WinZip is shareware, and comes with a 30-day free trial. You can download it from http://www.winzip.com/. Once you have downloaded it, you will need to install it (follow the instructions on the site).
Step 2: Open the Map/Mod
Once WinZip is installed, you should be able to simply double-click on any file with a .zip extension to see the files it contains. Maps and mods can come in a variety of file formats, which are described below.
- *.wld If the file has a .wld extension, this means it's a simple map. Files released in this format generally contain a file with a .tbn extension as well. This is simply the "thumbnail" image that is shown in the map selection screen. Both the .wld and the .tbn should be extracted to your Serious Sam installation directory, under the "Levels" folder. If it's a deathmatch map, it should be extracted to the Levels/DeathMatch folder.
- *.gro .gro files are container files just like .zip files. Maps and mods are generally released in .gro format when there are custom elements like sounds and textures. Most .gro files should simply be extracted to your Serious Sam installation directory (don't put it in a subfolder).
- *.* Any other files should have installation instructions included with the .zip file. Just open the file with WinZip and look for a readme.txt file or any other file with a .txt extension (.txt = text).
Once the files you need are extracted, you can close WinZip. Also, the .zip file is no longer needed, unless you want to keep an archive of the file. Just keep in mind that once the files are extracted from the .zip file, the ones you extracted are the files Serious Sam will use, not the ones inside the .zip file.
Step 3: Run Serious Sam
Once all the files are in place, simply run Serious Sam like normal. You can play DeathMatch (or any other Multiplayer game type) maps by clicking on Network/Start Server. You can play Single Player maps by clicking on Single Player, then selecting Custom Level from the menu. You'll have to scroll through all the game's original SP maps to find the one you just installed. Thanks Russell.
