Maw - The Revenge

The Massassi Temple » Levels/Mods » Jedi Outcast Single-Player Level » Maw - The Revenge

Description

This is the Jedi Knight level that decides which side of the force you're on. You fight Maw around and in a docking bay. Watch your steps as it'll hurt if you fall down.

Judging only by the screenshots, it doesn't look near as good as the original, which is strange due to it being entirely created in an updated engine.

When their are models of Gorc and Pic available I'll make their level. But I can't find them anywhere.

Is someone interested in the .map files of my levels? I would like it if someone tried to improve my levels.

In all it was pretty good. There was just a few problems though:
1. Maw looked like he was running
2. Talked like a reborn
3. I knocked Maw of the walkway. (He should of been able to float back up to me)
4. Maw couldn't fly.(Back to the running complaint... what did you do make his legs invisible?
5. Maw never flew away when you defeat him at each part.
6. Maw kept on doing the stupid uppercut and killing me.(It got frustrating)
7. Archi etc could of used some work

Other than that it was pretty good. Some of my complaints were pretty minor and didn't effect it too much. I'm sure you could fix them over time so i give it a 7.

1. I couldn't get him to fly decently, sorry. Does anyone know how to do this?
2. This can be fixed easely, I believe.
3. What do you mean you knocked him of the walkway? Did he die when he fell of? How did you do that?
4. There aren't any leg textures (this is easy to do), but I didn't make the model (see readme.txt).
5. I experimented doing that, but if he doesn't see his next target (place to go) he won't go there.
6. What uppercut?
7. What do you mean by this? Architecture? What's wrong with it? I'm not a well paid professional you know.

not bad at all. few flaws noted, however, but none that st_thomas hasnt already addressed. also, like he said, they were minor. other than that, a real pleasure to play.

i give it an 8

i think what st_thomas means is that, to me at least, is that it felt too much like playing inside a box and not the actual valley of the jedi. however, i am not a mapper so i wouldn't know how to fix that...just offering my two cents :)

what i meant was it felt like a box. the walkways ship and what not was right on. it just felt like playing in a box as zizzy said, and for what i said earlier...

3. when i knocked him off the walkway i might of killed him iono, because he screamed as he fell but at the same time he could of been screaming from being killed.(do you ask that because you put a no npc walk thing or whatever its called around the hole area?)
4. model - ya i forgot you didn't make it
6. when i say uppercut i mean when he attacks low and comes straight as you can do on the umm blue stance i think it is. crouch move forward and attack at the same time.
7.explained at beginning.

in all, just minor stuff that, as i said earlier, im sure you could fix.

good none the less

I think Maw was already dead when he started falling (at least deadly injured), I placed a block_npc texture around every walkway (except in the central tower), but when they are dead, npc's can fall through.

If you mean the mountains by boxed architecture, that can be fixed but it is a lot of work, I can't say I am looking forward to fixing that. It looked even more boxed in the original I thought. Even the ship was just a texture there, but the walls (mountains) had a little more variation I have to admit.

The uppercut thing has to do with his fighting stile, very hard to change that, I think you have to change the code for that.

I've been following this series, but I was totally let down by this one. :( The Yun level was exact, and the Jerec one not far behind, but this was a poor architectural rendition of my favorite Jedi duel from JK.

The canyon walls were abysmal(looked like they were done in JKedit ;) ) And the central area looked like a half-assed rush job. Only you should be improving the architecture in your levels. Take your time and do better. People remember quality, not mass-quantity rush jobs.

There are scripting tricks that would allow you to replicate the course of events from the original level. Also, I've played 3 of these duels, and still after 3 levels you haven't given any armor at the beginning of each level!

Take your time...

i feel bad because i feel like i am harping, but Rhettman is right, people in this community admire quality over quanitity, and even though it was it was really fun playing your maw level, there was a vague feeling of something to be desired...mainly just the architect. take you time, don't rush it. nobody is going to yell at you if it does take a month to build a level. again, i am not a mapper, just offering my two cents. i am not trying to browbeat you, and i think that every level you have made has been fantastic. but my final advice is do things are your own pace, not other people.

I'll be working on it, don't expect anything soon, and don't expect to much either. If you want anything changed, please describe it detailed here, preferably with a description how to do it (this is not required but it may help me).

Note: The central aria doesn't have a trench in the middle at the -1 floor because the compiler couldn't handle it. It didn't know what was visible to you close to the trench.

Things I fixed since release:

- Start with 100 armor.
- No more reborn sounds.
- Less quick dead by decapitation (for Maw).
- Ship redone.
- Mountains redone.
- Middle section redone.

I uploaded an improved version. For mappers who think they can improve it I included the .map file.

I know this is kinda late for a comment, but here it is. It seems to me that you are taking alot of flack for your level. Sure, there are some problems, every map does. But sit back and think about this:
-You have churned out three good levels in one summer. Most good mappers can't do that in a year. Take your time in releasing your maps. I'm sure that we can wait for a high quality map and we can do with the screenshots to wet our lips. Go at your own pace.
-I must agree with the others with the skybox/cliffs. It does look kinda fake but remember this. Your past levels have been indoors, so this is just your experimentation of an outdoor environment. I think everything else looks great.

In the end, just take your time and go at your own pace. You've accomplished alot in the last 3-5 months, and if you look back I think you'll agree. Email me if you have any questions...

Hey, no problem. That's why there's a comment system. I know what it's like to have your work bashed, but I also know how it feels to recieve a compliment. I think you have some real talent, and I wouldn't mind helping you if you need it. Email me if you need any beta testers.

Also, I meant to ask you if you ever updated the Maw file. I know you posted a comment fixing some bugs, but I don't remember Massassi posting a note for a Maw update. I downloaded it when you first released it, and I don't think I have an updated file. Just wondering...

I have send an update but Massassi hasn't uploaded it yet. If it's not up by the end of the week, i'll send it again.

I'm not working on something now, but I have some idees and I'll probably start editing again when I return home from vacation.
