If Today is Monday, This Must be Italy - Kedri @ 10:18 AM
Ciao folks! It's Kedri, reporting after a few impulsive travel decisions from the trenches (ha ha) in Milano, Italia. So far my vacation's been intensely awesome. Computer withdrawal's been tough, so when I walked into this train station here to book passage for Tuscany tomorrow and I found this "Cabina di Web" (Web Booth) I slid the charge card through and started browsing again like a junkie getting his fix. It's like 4,000 lyra for five minutes, which turns out to be something like two bucks. I love how cheap everything is here...

I haven't checked my e-mail in ages—I don't think I can do it from here, this thing's pretty bare-bones—but through an Italian-based Netscape and the miracle of Babelfish I'm posting here. I thought of all you guys when I noticed that movie theaters here are still showing The Phantom Menace, believe it or not! I think I'll check it out just to listen to the Italian voice-overs. That should be a hoot. :) I should be touching down back in the U.S. some time next week, so until then I hope you're all doing well. Take it easy everybody!
Correction - Brian @ 4:38 PM
The EvilTimes level posted just below this was originally posted as a JK level. It's a MotS level, so if you downloaded it and couldn't get it to work, that's why (you most likely noticed that it's a .goo instead of .gob). Thanks to Brian (no, not me, it must be another Brian) for emailing me about it.
New Rbots Released - Brian @ 4:47 PM

JK 3rd Person Cam Coordinates - Jepman @ 6:49 PM
Ok, I am going to post this really quickly in the news, since I figured everyone would like to know this. Its nothing very special, I just figured out how to change the Jedi Knight 3rd Person Camera's location behind the player. You simply have to edit the _actor template and change the x,y,z of the EyeOffSet. It changes both POV and 3rd Person cams. Try it if you'd like.
16-Bit Colors - Jepman @ 6:54 PM
Well I would suggest roaming through the Showcase forum, because now you can see loads of new screenshots using 16-bit colored levels. Visit this thread or this one for good views of 16-bit Jedi Knight in all its glory.

New Tutorial (Kindof): Circular Outdoor Architecture - Brian @ 12:16 AM
While reading this thread on the Showcase forum, I was wondering why people were having a problem with a method that was outlined in one of our tutorials. So, I went to the tutorials section so I could post a link, and to my surprise, the tutorial wasn't listed! So here it is: Circular Outdoor Architecture. It describes a killer way to create awesome architecture using a combination of perfect polygons, domes, and of course, cleaving and deleting. The tutorial was submitted just about a year ago, so somewhere in our various server issues it apparently got deleted from the tutorials page. It was sent in by Jkior, whom I haven't seen around here lately (are you still around?).

A Reminder... - Juztyn @ 8:42 PM
I'd like to take this moment to remind everyone about our policy concerning level submissions. I just finished off a batch, and out of 9 submission only 4 were done correctly. This is bad. Please remember to attach at least two screenshots, preferably in jpg format. Also, a few submissions either did not include the required text file in the zip, or did not even bother to zip up the gob. Lastly, two of the submissions didn't have such easy-to-include things as the name and email of the author. We can't post your level without that!

So remember, next time you're writing up a submission, go over this simple checklist before sending it:
- Did I zip up the gob and the text file and attach them?
- Did I attach at least two screenshots in jpg format?
- Have I included the name of the level, my name, and my email?
- Have I included a short and legible description of the level/mod?

Thanks!

The Massassi Level Contest #3 - Brian @ 7:34 AM
That's right folks, it's that time again! I am very pleased to announce the official commencement of the Massassi Temple Level Contest #3. Weren't here for the last one? Let me explain.

We accept JK MP level submissions from anyone that wants to submit them (for the contest). These submissions are sent out to the judges (judging list is yet to be announced - it will consist of some of the staff members of Massassi as well as quite a few well-known members of the JK community). The levels that win (the number depends on the number of high-quality submissions) will be compiled into an official level pack that will be showcased on our main page for the rest of our existence (see the level packs 1 & 2 above).

If you plan to submit a level, please read the rules and follow the instructions. The deadline is November 10th, 2000, which gives you ONE MONTH. Good luck!
New Obi-Wan Interview - Brian @ 8:05 AM
Nextgame.it has posted a new interview with Lucasarts' Stephen Shaw regarding Obi-Wan. There are screenshots as well. Here is a small sample:
Nextgame.it: Tell us something about the multiplayer aspect of the game, we have heard news about a mode called Protect The Queen and about a cooperative mode too.

Stephen Shaw: Protect the Queen will be a team game in which the players will divide themselves into two sides, the Federation and Sith, and the Naboo guard and Jedi. The Jedi / Naboo will have to escort safely escort the queen to a location to score. The game can also be reversed so that the Trade Federation / Sith must escort a Nemoidian to a location in order to score. There won't be a way to cooperatively play the single player missions, so the cooperative aspect will be limited mostly to PTQ and possible some other MP missions. We are developing additional multiplayer levels beyond these two as well.

Along with this, you can now look up forgotten passwords and such. Note: the reason this wasn't done sooner is because I had to do a whole bunch of custom programming to force the UBB software to use the massassi.net smtp server...

    Rbots 0.21 Released - Brian @ 11:07 AM
Rbots version 0.21 has been released! If you don't know what Rbots are, you really, really need to go visit the site and read about them. Here's the short version.
Rbots is a project to create a 'bot' for Jedi Knight. A bot is a computer controlled player for multiplayer games. It should react and play just like a human player - it has health, shields, limited ammo & weapons and when it dies it will 'respawn' to allow the game to continue. Multiple bots will battle amongst themselves as well as any number of human players.
You can find all the fixes and changes on the Rbots page. Big thanks to the folks in the chat room for tipping me off.
Rbots Development Kit - Brian @ 11:10 AM

    Etc. - Brian @ 9:34 AM
I'm in the process of moving (yet again), so I won't be around much. I don't know how long it will take to get my phone hooked up (and thus, internet access), so don't be alarmed if I'm not around for a few days.

Level Contest Reminder - Keep working! I've literally seen some of the best looking screenshots for JK ever over on the showcase forum. It looks like this will be the best level pack so far.
Shaw Pulled Off of Obi-Wan Project - Kedri @ 2:21 PM
We all heard the sad news earlier that Obi-Wan's release was pushed back to Q1 2001, but what we didn't hear was that Stephen Shaw was asked to step down as project leader as well. The wording in the following quote strikes me as a bit sensationalistic, but if TheForce.net is confident enough to post it, so are we:
There was a recent announcement from LucasArts Entertainment that their Obi-Wan project has fallen out of the year's release schedule. Rumor has it the project leader on the thing for the last 3 years was one Stephen Shaw, who previously headed up the Mysteries of the Sith project. At Lucas Arts, project leaders are the producer & lead designer and overall dictators over their projects.

What the announcement failed to mention was management is pulling Shaw off the project and behind the decision was a classic "palace coup" with the entire team, sparked by the current lead programmer (the 4th or 5th on the project thus far). Shaw was on vacation when the decision was made, and he was even asked to delay his return for another week while management sorted things out with the team. Eventually the decision was to remove him from the project and admit to the inevitable delay.

Apparently Shaw is now working on some sort of "special projects team," which everybody knows is essentially one foot out the door.
Who now helms the project is still unclear, but one thing that is certain is that it'll be just that much longer before we ever get our grubby hands on the game. A zillion thanks go to Chewbubba for the scoop.

"Jedi Knight still stands as the best planet side Star Wars game ever" - Brandon @ 6:25 PM
It seems that my previous post has somehow disappeared. Anyway, over at pc.ign.com there is an article about Jedi Knight. Here's a clip:
Also, no other first person shooter has come close to Jedi Knight's dizzying sense of scale and its vast levels. Unlike dungeon-based engines like Quake and Unreal, Jedi Knight goes on and on in all different directions. Even better, there is a thrilling rush of vertigo when you look down the side of a building or into a chasm. Even though you can always reload if you fall, you'll feel a strangely tangible sense of dread when you're working your way across a precarious set of beams or a narrow ledge on a cliff. I think Jedi Knight put something in my drink, because I don't get this way playing other first person shooters.
Boss Key for Jedi Knight? - Archimedes @ 9:26 AM
A boss key for Jedi Knight? Millennium has made just that. Here's Hideki's colorful description of this contraption.
Do you like to play JK while doing homework, while at work or at school? Don't like teachers or bosses coming at you? Do not fear anymore as this Boss Key will solve it! Once pressed, it will ask you to exit or not, press again and you will instantly go back to your desktop! And it even autosaves your single player mission! Just keep Word opened in the background and your boss won't know!

There are a few secrets and one "Evil-ly Placed" Armor. The one thing I like about this level is its small enough for 1 on 1's and big enough for 3-4 people. This is a good gunning level as well as for sabers! Enjoy!

    Obi-Wan: All Shook Up - blujay @ 2:55 PM
Adm. Canuck of Obi-Wan Network posted this today about Obi-Wan:
My source in LEC has informed me that the news of Shaw leaving the Obi-Wan project to be true. He also mentioned of the glyph system to be removed and more action shall be placed in the game. More like JK saber combat. On a final note, it could be that Obi-Wan may be pushed back further and redesigned for PS2 or XBox, but that is unconfirmed. Looks like Obi-Wan is still deep in hot water.
*sigh* Will Obi-Wan ever set a steady course?

    Etc. - Brian @ 2:11 AM
Well, I haven't had much time to update Massassi lately due to numerous behind-the-scenes issues. In case you haven't heard, we're moving to a new server soon (well, in a month or two). I've been busy learning how to administer the thing (talk about a pain).

As some of you may know, I used to be a pretty avid perl programmer, although I've since moved to PHP. However, when I was into perl, I programmed and released a freeware free-for-all links script that runs on your web server. You can see an example of it if you click here. Anyway, I've updated the links script to version 1.2. If you would like to download and install it on your server, feel free to visit Script Central and download it. Please note that I don't provide tech support on this script. If you haven't ever installed a perl (or CGI) script, you may have problems, but if you have, it will be pretty easy.

Rock the Vote - Kedri @ 6:06 PM
Here's your chance to participate in a little election of your own: LucasArts has updated the opinion poll on its homepage with the following question: "Which of these is your favorite Star Wars PC Game(s)?" As it stands, the X-Wing Series is leading the poll, with Jedi Knight a close second. Alright, you guys know what to do. That's right, vote for Phantom Menace, easily the single most brilliant game on the planet. Riiiiiight. Many thanks to Rogue Leader, our ever-vigilant and frequent forum contributor.

    Forums - Brian @ 2:28 PM
As you may or may not have heard, we have been having problems with the forums. Last night, the UBB started deleting threads and users, so we took them down. I then installed a new set of forums on this server (the old forums are not on this server). Unfortunately, due to the fact that our server is slower than a 98 year old grandma, we had to take them down. Right now I'm in the process of repairing the old forums, which we will use until we get our new server installed (1-2 months). At that time, we will move back to the new style forums.

Earlier I had to remove "Purgatory," a JK MP level I posted yesterday, from our server. The author chose to include an image among the various custom mats that violated the End User License Agreement LucasArts sets forth in the creation and distribution of custom JK levels. From what I could see, a lot of work was put into this level, and several of you out there were really looking forward to its release, so it's with much regret that this had to be done. For anyone else that may be out there contemplating something similar to this, please observe the EULA. We do.
