Help Wanted: Level Posters - Brian @ 6:09 PM
The Massassi Temple is currently looking for people to post levels on a daily basis. Frankly, I'm frustrated with the number of people that come on the job, post for a week or two, then simply stop posting. I'm not interested in taking anyone on with this type of mentality, so please, before you even consider applying for this position, take a long look at yourself and your history and make a rational decision on whether or not you're the type of person to stick with this job over the long term. These are volunteer positions! Nobody makes any money from Massassi. If you're interested in applying for this position, read on.

1. Level posting at Massassi is not a glamorous position. It's very tedious and time-consuming. You have to deal with an extreme number of incorrect submissions. It takes a long time to download, process, upload, type in the information, and verify that each level is posted correctly. This isn't a joke. It's a very tedious process and it is WORK.

2. I'm only interested in taking someone into the staff as a level poster. I don't need news posters and I don't need someone trying to change the site. All I need is a level poster. If this isn't the position that you're ULTIMATELY after, please don't apply.

3. If you're not good at sticking with projects for the long term (say, at least 3 months of ACTIVE participation on a daily [or MOSTLY daily] basis), please don't apply. I understand that people have other obligations such as school and work, however I'm not interested in taking someone into the staff if they just don't have time or motivation for it.

4. You will not get a Massassi email address until you have proven to us that you are a reliable level poster.

5. You must ALREADY know the following:
  • How to use ftp to upload files to a server.
  • How to resize and reformat image files (such as .gif to .jpg).
  • Basic HTML by hand (we don't use editors such as FrontPage).
  • How to use a pop3 mail reader to access email and extract attachments.
6. You must already HAVE the following:
  • Broadband access - 56k modems don't count!
  • An FTP program that you are comfortable with.
  • A pop3 mail reader you can use to retrieve large attachments (I have yet to hear of even one web-based email system that can handle the size of the attachments I am talking about so please don't apply if you have hotmail or something similar!).
7. If you have read and understand all of the above requirements and qualifications, please email me the following information. Please note that if you don't include all the information, your application will not be considered.
  • The nickname you would like me to use for your identity on the main page if you are selected.
  • The email address you would like displayed on the main page if you are selected.
  • The type of internet access you have.
  • The FTP program you currently use and will use for posting levels at Massassi.
  • The mail reader you will be using to check the Massassi levels account.
  • The approximate time per day you can spend posting levels. This must be a couple of hours per day at least 4 days a week.
  • A short paragraph or a couple of sentences on why you think you would be good for the job.
Massassi City Project - blujay @ 11:49 AM
Radice has been coordinating a very neat project on the showcase forum, the Massassi City Project. Anyone can download the starting city block, build a building on it, and submit it to be put together into the full city. Quite a few people have submitted theirs, and others are working on their block too. It's looking great so far, so be sure to check it out!

It is set in the scene of an Ancient Temple like Arena. I created this for No Force, and thus there are no Force Items of any kind. Neither are there any Health or Shield Items. In an Arena. There are no second chances. Heed the Call. Take the Journey.

Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2

Luckily, you were in the basement of the facility at the time of the attack. These terrorists have somehow changed all the passwords on the doors and turned all the security measures against you.

This is my first level I've released, so if there's something in the level that you didn't like, be kind.

Level Posters - Rob @ 6:33 PM
I would like you all to welcome our new level posters. These people should be pretty solid when it comes to level posting.

Also on a side note to those who sent in applications. You are still being considered if one of the new guys is not dependable.

Please do not send anymore applications. If we run out of possible people then we will let you know. So just sit tight and enjoy the new levels.

Before I go, those who submit levels please make it easy on the new recruits by following all the submission guidelines. Thankyou.

Rob

New Level Poster - Backslash @ 7:17 PM
Hi everyone. I'm Backslash, most of you should know me if you visit #massassi frequently. Hopefully I'll meet up to the requirements needed without failure, or something professional like that. See ya around.

Script Problems - Brian @ 9:54 PM
It seems like we've been hit with a data bug similar to the year 2000 bug. Basically, we store all our dates in unix timestamps which are simply long integers equal to the "number of seconds since January 1, 1970." Apparently MySQL (the database we use to power most of the site) choked when it went from 999999999 to 1000000000. Hopefully a new version of this popular database software will be released shortly, but until then, please bear with us. This could possibly affect level sorting by date, news, "recent" lists (such as the EC), and other date specific areas.

New MotS Multiplayer Level: Skies of Aduin - Rob @ 12:15 AM
File: Skies of Aduin
Author: Lord_Grismath
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: The fairly large world of Aduin is located in the closer reaches of the Outer Rim, just bordering Wild Space. It's tourist population (all four of them, lol) comes everly twelve millenia to see the planet's spectacular skies and geological phenomina. Due to the planet's below-standard gravity, material from the planet's relatively small surface have been able to drift up into the outer reaches of the planet's atmoshpere, making landing on the surface extremely difficult. There's the story, now here's the details:

I've been seeing multiple versions of what I categorise as the '3do hopper'. These have had the potential to be interesting (as mine strives for but most likely fails at), but have become increasingly not so interesting. I did this in under 2 hrs, ok? So give me a break, I was trying to prove that the 3do hopper CAN look fairly interesting.

Help Wanted: Forum Administrator - Brian @ 1:31 AM
In an effort to whip this site back into shape, you may have noticed that quite a few new staff members are being brought aboard. This time, I'm looking specifically for a forum administrator. Please note I said administrator and not moderator, although moderation will be part of the required duties. Basically, I'm looking for someone that can respond to all email we get about the forums. This usually consists of reports of abuse (for threads the current moderators haven't caught yet, for instance), requests for passwords (often people typo the email address so the password must be looked up manually), and queries as to why a certain person has been banned. The following is a list of requirements, so please do not apply if you don't have this type of experience.

  • Experience using UBB as a regular user.
  • Experience using the UBB administration panel as an administrator.
  • Experience using FTP in relation to UBB (to take care of problems that can't be handled via the administration panel such as looking up passwords).

In addition to these specific requirements, the following personal values are desired.

  • Diligence in following up every single email that comes in regarding the forums.
  • Diligence in documenting all bans and action taken in our ban list system (separate from UBB).
  • Strong sense of fairness and justice regardless of personal feelings towards certain people (IE: just because you don't like a person is no reason to be unfair in handling forum issues).
  • An understanding of our forum rules, why they are there, and an agreement with at least most of them.
  • The ability to enforce even the rules you don't agree with.

Although this job doesn't take as much time as our other typical jobs (news and level posting, for instance), it is nevertheless a very important position. The ideal candidate should be able to check the forums email address at the very least once per day and have an average turn-around of no more than 24 hours. This position has a 30 day trial period - if you join the team and don't perform your duties adequately within in the first 30 days, we will choose someone else.

If you feel you have the experience, time, and energy for this volunteer position, please send an email to me with the following information. If you leave anything out, your application will not be considered.

  1. The name or nickname you use and would like displayed on our pages.
  2. The email address you will use to handle forum email (all "forums@massassi.net" email will be forwarded to an address you specify during the first month - if, after that, you are still on staff, you will be issued an @massassi.net email address if you want one).
  3. A description of your previous experience regarding UBB administration, FTP, and any previous moderation experience.
  4. A few sentences or a short paragraph describing why you would be the ideal candidate for this position.

Massassi/Command Chamber Email Problems - Brian @ 2:39 PM
Apparently our host deleted all email accounts and is reinstalling the email server. Why they didn't let everyone check their mail before hand, I don't know. Anyway, all email accounts for Massassi and our hosted sites are currently down and all email is lost. I will work to rebuild all the accounts and I will post a note here when things are back to normal.
Email Update - Brian @ 3:18 PM
Well I rebuilt all the accounts - if you have an account and are having problems logging in, please send me an email. As for forum administration applications - if you sent it after 2PM Pacific today, I didn't get it so you'll have to resend.

The long wait is finally over! The 0.31 alpha version for Jedi Knight is now released and available for download. The file size now weighs in at a hefty 5.8Mb, but I assure you, it's worth it.

Here's a quick list of the new features:

  • Bot characteristics - each bot is configurable to which force powers to use
  • All levels now support No Force or Full Force

  • Huge range of improvements and bug fixes - see the 'changes.txt' for the full list

Next on the list is the MotS version, a whole new SDK and updated tutorials. Check out the Rbots website for further details.

There are no words... - Brian @ 1:22 PM
I'm sure everyone's heard by now, but just in case... The United States suffered a massive terrorist attack this morning. Commercial jets were hijacked and purposefully crashed into the World Trade Center, which subsequently collapsed, and the Pentagon, which suffered minor damage in comparison. Each tower of the WTC was hit by separate jets, and the pentagon was hit by a 3rd one. A 4th jet was reportedly hijacked but crashed in a nearly deserted area of Pennsylvania. You can find more news on virtually any site on the internet. There's really not much more to say - I would give anything to be in a position to do something about this.
There is a way to help - mscbuck @ 3:30 PM
I am shocked at what happened today..I am absolutly speechless. There is a way to help if your 18 or older. If you wanted to do anything to help, here is your chance. You can call Red Cross Blood Donation Center at 1-800-448-3543 to donate your blood.( you must be 18 ).This is a tragic event, and people need all the help they can get.

File: Fest
Author: The_Lost_One/Rogue15/Garindan

New MotS Multiplayer Level: Temple of Chaos - mscbuck @ 12:14 PM
File: Temple of Chaos
Author: Arashi Kage & Darth Slither
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: The Temple of Chaos could be considered a large level. The design is meant to encourage a more traditional first person shooter gameplay style in which you are not constantly in contact with your opponents. The temple floor consists of a main room intersected by 3 hallways and one throne room. The hallways provide access to various rooms and gravity tubes which lead to the second and third floors. The second floor is relatively small and consists of a couple hallways, three rooms, and two air ducts. Entering and exiting the second floor is one way. There are two ways up and two ways down. The rooftop of the temple provides an open area for FF sabers or a gun fight with some supply crates for cover. In each corner of the rooftop you will find a blaster cannon; however, all ammo has been removed and placed in a secret area. Now only those who find the ammo and dare to use it have the power of the cannon. You will find the surge, revive, and cannon ammo within secret areas. A two player game may seem long, but three or more players provides many encounters with your opponents. The story line of this level is that it is the ancient temple of the BoC, and the upper levels are undergoing a refit process into a more modern state. It is highly recommended that you enable 3d acceleration for this level.

New Jedi Knight Single Player Level: A Jedi's Discovery 2: The Dark Mask - mscbuck @ 6:35 PM
File: A Jedi's Discovery 2: The Dark Mask
Author: Zippy1000
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: This is a SINGLE PLAYER LEVEL FOR JK. Sorry for not creditting some of the contributors last time I submitted. I have done so in this revised addition of AJD2. Last you left off at you had defeated the cloned sith of Darth Maul, before finding out there where no weapon plans, it was simply a trap for the jedi. Jedi council member Koben Katarn picked you up after defeating the sith. When you came back to the Jedi Council, Yoda told you he already had foreseen there were no weapon plans. The council thinks that there may be a link from the trade federation for the cloning of the sith. He had to be defeated, thats why Yoda didn't say anything. He has assigned you with a new mission. There is a space station that has been orbitting Tatooine for a while now. He want's you to go to the space station a find out what there doing orbiting Tatooine. What you and the council don't know is that the space station is run by genetically engineered cyborgs (cyborgs are part flesh part robot, so they will bleed). They can push themselves harder, longer then any other normal man or droid. They have guns built into their arms, and they are also fast shooters. Note: The patch that came with the level, I put there for a reason. It's very important in order to get the full effect for this game. One other thing. When you quikesave, make sure you don't have your lightsaber out, and make sure there is no saber sounds going on. (for instance turning it off, or clashing etc.) and when you die and you load again, pause it and go to load and load it again, or else it may screw up your force powers.
Submission Rules - BrianTheSith @ 9:19 AM
I just would like to remind everyone that when you submit a file, you need to follow certain guidelines and rules. It seems like most of what we've been recieving lately has not had 1 or 2 required parts to it. Please review the submission guidelines and rules before sending anything in. If it doesn't meet these standards, please don't send it. Thank you.

JK Arena - Experienced Level Authors Needed - Brian @ 5:23 AM
JK Arena is a new modification I've been working on. I am in need of some experienced level authors to contribute small arena levels. If you are interested, please visit the JK Arena site for more specific information. I also need a few teams of beta testers. Again, please visit the JK Arena site for the specifics.

Please Note: If you're an 'old timer,' you may remember me trying to get this project going a couple of times in the past. This is not like those times. This time, I'm not dependent on some coggers, as I decided to learn the language. So basically, the cogs are done, and all we need now are some good levels!
We'll get them up soon - mscbuck @ 1:18 PM
To all authors who have submitted their levels or mods in the past few days. Don't start worrying about your level/mod not being posted. We have recieved your files, but have not been able to post them due to technical difficulties. Please don't re-submit your levels/mods, thinking we haven't recieved them.

You should notice, especially if you are on a slow connection, that the tutorials index and the level database pages load much faster now. I switched the tutorials index to PHP and added gzip compression to it and the levels database. So if you are using a compatible browser (IE6, Opera, some versions of IE5, and others too I'm sure), your download time will be drastically reduced on those pages.

JK Arena Level Authors + Beta Testers - Brian @ 5:46 AM
I was shocked at the sheer number of responses to my request for level authors and beta testers. Beta testing applications are, as of now, no longer being accepted (I have enough, thanks!). Anyone who got in should receive an email message by Wednesday night at midnight Pacific.

I sent an email to all level authors that expressed interest, but if you asked on the forums or chat and didn't provide a valid email address, you didn't get added to the list. Please email me if you need to be added. The email contains instructions for downloading and installing the JK Arena resources in your levels.

This will probably be the last JK Arena update on the main page of Massassi until right before the official release, but if you want to keep up on the latest JK Arena news, please drop by the JK Arena web site every once in a while. Don't worry, it will get a face-lift before the initial release.
