Etc. - Brian @ 1:24 AM
Well, big apology for the lack of levels in the past few days. As you know, we're having problems with both UGO and the forums. The forums situation is temporarily solved. I will decide what to do about them once I hear back from UGO.

My other reason for being scarce around here is the fact that I've been busily coding on a great new feature for Massassi. It's in the final beta testing stage with the staff and a select few other individuals, and I hope to release it some time this week.

Speaking of this week... I'm starting school tomorrow. This quarter I'm taking C programming, Introduction to Logic (?), and Introduction to Operating Systems. That last one is a required course that I'm going to try to challenge out of. Unless I forget how to double-click.

Finally, I hope everyone had a safe and happy new years celebration.
New Enemy at Have Lightsaber, Will Travel. - Hebedee @ 12:36 PM
MikeC updated hosted site Have Lightsaber, Will Travel with a new enemy, a punching stormtrooper. He also says that it can only be used with MotS, and that he will be posting more level ideas in the near future. You can get it here.
New Feature: Editor's Corner - Brian @ 2:09 PM
I am very pleased to announce the immediate release of The Massassi Temple's newest feature: The Editor's Corner. The Editor's Corner is a place for members of the Massassi community to share screenshots and information on their current projects. It's a totally free service and you can update it as often as you'd like.

The Editor's Corner is designed to give authors a place to show off their work without requiring them to learn HTML, FTP, and whatever else it takes to get images on the web. Once you are signed up, you can upload your images to our server via an easy-to-use web interface. Recent updates are now listed on the main page, and when you add images, you are also presented with a URL that you can paste into the showcase forum.

As with any new service, there are bound to be a couple of bugs. We've done our best to beta-test the heck out of it, but likely there's something we missed. If you find anything out of place, don't hesitate to drop me a line.

Be sure to read and follow all the rules before posting. As I mentioned in those rules, since this service is easily viewable on the main page, we must have a more strict content control policy.
Last of the Logos - blujay @ 3:20 PM
Well, here are some final logos for our holiday season. Most of these were sent in before Christmas; I'm sorry for taking so long to post them.

Well, this will probably be the final posting of logos for this holiday season, unless there are any last-second submissions.

The contest has really been a success this year, with eighty-nine (yes, 89) logos posted, plus thirty-eight from last year.

To all the authors who have taken the time to make up a logo and send it in, a big thanks and best holiday wishes. Next year's should be even more amazing.

New Partnership: FileLeech.com - Brian @ 7:00 PM
The Massassi Temple is about to open a partnership with FileLeech.com, a files site in the I/O Error Network. What will this partnership mean for our visitors? It means all the levels and mods that we have hosted on our SWFiles.net domain will now be hosted by FileLeech.com. The level download pages will now forward you to the FileLeech servers after counting your download.

You're probably asking... Why? The reason is that our bandwidth prices have skyrocketed, and we are no longer able to afford them. Not to mention the fact that internet advertising is currently in a slump... FileLeech.com has been extremely helpful in getting our files mirrored (should be complete some time this week or next week). I would like to personally thank Zerozombie for his help in getting this set up quickly. I would also like to thank SL_Jedi_Bubba_Fatt for pointing out FileLeech.com in the first place.

Please Note: We cannot post any levels while this transfer is going on. I will try to provide a download link for the ones sent in, but I'm still devising a solution to this problem. I will keep you updated.

Etc. - Brian @ 12:00 AM
Okay I updated the Editor's Corner a bit tonight, you can now see the email addresses of the people who post. Sorry for leaving that out. Sorry for the late news (above) but it appears our news guys (Archimedes, Hebedee) are taking a break.
JK Level Contest @ Blaumph.com - Brian @ 12:03 AM
A new JK site called Blaumph.com is holding a JK MP level contest (I guess it's the cool thing to do nowadays). They're even offering a prize for the winner...
ISDA Sues St. Louis County - Brian @ 12:10 AM
Wolfy sends word that Happy Puppy has posted an article regarding a lawsuit filed against the government for trying to regulate the video games industry. Apparently, a new law bans minors from buying and renting "M" rated games, as well as even entering video game arcades.
"Video games are a modern form of artistic expression that have the same level of First Amendment protection as films, records, and books," stated IDSA president Douglas Lowenstein.
A very interesting read, it's definitely something that can affect all us computer gaming fans.
Star Wars Galaxies: 'Question Roundup' - Archimedes @ 2:18 PM
This is a wee bit late, but important nonetheless. On the official Star Wars Galaxies forum, Ralph 'Holocron' Koster, the Creative Director of Star Wars Galaxies, has posted a 'question roundup' covering a lot of newly announced features and options that will be available in the game. Also, there is a current thread that asks you for a simple, one sentence question for the development team; if you want your suspicions answered, be sure to check that out as well.

Many thanks to Jedi Legacy for the news.
Tiny Textures Closing Shop - Archimedes @ 2:42 PM
The everfamous Tiny Textures, the site that just couldn't stop handing out top-quality mats to beautify your level, is unfortunately closing shop. If you haven't already, be sure to check out the wonderful gallery, as well as the downloads page for all the great texture packs. Farewell, Tiny Textures.
Announcing - CTF Level Contest - Archimedes @ 2:54 PM
That's right. The Massassi CTF Level Contest is officially underway. The deadline for the contest is set for February 28, 2001. This gives you roughly two months to create, test, and submit your CTF level. Be sure to read the rules. So, open your editing programs and start cleaving away!

Mplayer.com Supports Jedi Knight - blujay @ 8:30 PM
Mplayer.com now supports Jedi Knight games. Take a look here. Thanks to JediideJ for letting us know.
DBSSTC Web Site - blujay @ 10:14 PM
Pokewedge sent us word of the DBSSTC Web site. The screenshots look pretty good, so have a look.
Starfighters Mod - blujay @ 10:20 PM
DFLev sent us this e-mail about their Starfighters mod for JK:
For the last few months, a little known Dark Forces editing group slowly migrated from strictly Dark Forces: Rebel Agent to include Jedi Knight as well. For some time, people have been making starship mods that allow you to fly as a ship of your choice, but most of those mods ended up scrapped or discarded by the JK community because of their poor make. One of the DFLev editors noticed this problem and downloaded a few mods himself. After looking at the coding and other files, we decided that it wouldn't be all that hard to make a halfway decent starfighter mod.

The work began using one of the mods that is no longer able to be found on any JK servers, but it was a start. Using the 3dos and playing with the COG scripts, a simple MOD was created. After a few successful tests, questions like "how about charging lasers and shields" and "how about varying hull and shield strength" came up. All of this got integrated into the MOD Starfighters v1.0 Beta. The Internet Gaming Zone proved a good place to grab some Beta testers, who unanimously decided that the MOD was actually fun to play.

Since the original verison, which included the A-wing, TIE Fighter, and TIE Interceptor, we've added the X-wing. Although the X-wing has serious limitations (due to compatability issues), version 2.0 of the MOD will greatly extend the X-wing's abilities. Also, since the main DFLev server is down for some reason, a mirror site with screenshots and updates has been set up at http://members.nbci.com/hbcommand/pictures/index.htm until we can get the original site up and running again.
So, head on over and take a look.
Etc. - Brian @ 3:57 AM
The FileLeech.com deal has been postponed for a little while. I'm sorry but I can't elaborate any further at this point. Expect more information towards the end of the month. So anyway, this means we're going to start posting levels again, so feel free to send them in.
New Jedi Knight Multiplayer Level: Duel Over Death - Brian @ 4:03 AM
File: Duel Over Death
Author: Sith Scout
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: This is a medium sized multiplayer level with lots of regenerating glass and also an indoor ice rink. There is a pit that you can fall into and you die unless you fall on one of the special squares. Also this level has a room where you can use force throw a ton. This level is for designed for 2-4 people. This is my first level I have ever made so E-mail me about it.
New Jedi Knight Multiplayer Level: GunStar - Brian @ 4:05 AM
File: GunStar
Author: Gundam Blackstealth
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: This level is medium sized and has two floors.
New Jedi Knight Multiplayer Level: MBHG Castle Fight 1 - Brian @ 4:07 AM
File: MBHG Castle Fight 1
Author: Brad Nott (MBHG_BOLLUX_LM)
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: This is a large, mostly indoor, mansion/castle level made for the MBHG guild. It is the first multiplayer level that I have ever made and published. There are 8 secret passageways, all major weapons (which are all mostly hidden in secret places), and some framerate problems, but they really aren't too bad. E-mail me if you need any help in finding all of my 8 secret passages. Thank you all editors whose mats and 3do's I have used in this level, I cannot remember your names, but you can take all the credit for the decorative part you played in this level.
New MotS Multiplayer Level: Surface Disposal Outpost - Brian @ 4:08 AM
File: Surface Disposal Outpost
Author: adrenal_medulla
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: This is a small to medium level intended for 2-4 players. It is situated on the surface of a large asteroid mined for its chemicals and gasses. Waste is sent here to the surface to be jettisoned. At the bottom of the level is an acid bath which will cause damage if fallen into. Just above the acid is an area big enough for good gunplay. In the center is a tower with an enclosed, circular room for close saber fighting. Above this room is the roof of the tower which allows for more open saber fighting and for shooting at players down below. There are also vents that will carry players from the bottom to the roof. Includes four secret areas.
New Jedi Knight Multiplayer Level: Trainer - Brian @ 4:11 AM
File: Trainer
Author: Saber_Phantom1
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: 5 rooms to choose from. 4 of them are for sabers and 1 is for guns. It has lots of secrets in it too.
New Jedi Knight Multiplayer Level: A Stroll Through Town - Brian @ 4:13 AM
File: A Stroll Through Town
Author: ThreeDee
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: I originally made this level for the JKT partial conversion at http://www.jedinights.com/JKT, but that was months and months ago and I want to get this out there before it becomes completely obsolete in the face of so many amazing user-made levels by the community. It does have one annoying crash as a result of many explosions at once, which I tried and tried to remedy without success. However, I was working on it for over a month and feel it would be a waste to never release it. It's a medium-sized level with good flow (there are three exits out of most rooms) and some of the best architecture and connectivity I've ever done for JK, save the level I submitted to the second Massassi level contest, Sky Station.
New MotS Multiplayer Level: Pit Stop - Brian @ 4:15 AM
File: Pit Stop
Author: DrodiT
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: This level was made for quick fighting. Good for saber dueling and soldier shoot-outs. It reminds me much of Gantry. It takes place in the high clouds above the planet Adega. It is a rest area where travelers can stop and take a break from the long journey. And while the owner of the pit stop is dead in his room the pit stop has been over run by YOU (and your enemies).
New Jedi Knight Multiplayer Level: Deathmatch Arena - Brian @ 4:17 AM
File: Deathmatch Arena
Author: Saber_Tux
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: This level is designed for 4-5 players to fight with guns & sabers.
Major Updates at The Admirals Command Chamber - Hebedee @ 1:04 PM
Ryan of hosted site The Admirals Command Chamber has had many updates since the new year, including new levels and updating the level features section. Here's what he has to say about the level features section.
I'm getting ready to enhance the features section, so any feature that has not been updated in the last 12 months will be removed during this process. If you are the author of any of the following levels and you are still working on it, let me know and send new screenshots and progress information. Otherwise, they will be deleted in about a week's time.

On the removal list:
  • Allies of the Force
  • I-153 Imperial Patrol Craft
  • Imperial Retribution
  • Jedi Academy Trilogy
  • Mos Eisley Spaceport
  • Saber Battle on Naboo
  • Search for Revenge
  • Star Wars: A Jedi's Journey
  • The Lost Fortress
  • Smugglers of Nomad 9
  • The Third Death Star
All other features will remain. Thanks!
The new levels that they posted look great, so head on over to The Admirals Command Chamber.

Forums - Brian @ 9:36 AM
The original forums are back up, but the DNS records may not have updated for your local servers. So basically, until they're working for everyone, I'm not going to change the link. But if you can access them (http://forums.massassi.net/), I encourage you to go ahead and use them. Talk about a headache. I'll give everyone more information on what exactly went on when I hash out the details of what's going to happen next. That sounded pretty cryptic, eh? Well, just as a hint, with money from advertising going downhill, and Massassi traffic going uphill, we're having quite a few problems making ends meet. I'm trying to hash out a deal right now with UGO, and I should find out about that Monday or Tuesday. If that doesn't work, I have no idea what we're going to do. If you know of a web host that can offer a dedicated server (please no virtual accounts) with >160GB of transfer per month (no "unlimited bandwidth" providers as they're all lying anyway) for a really good price (I'm talking: cheap), feel free to drop me a line.
New Jedi Knight Multiplayer Level: Matrix Building - Kedri @ 2:21 PM
File: Matrix Building
Author: BenKenoby
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: I've tried to recreate the world at the end of the movie "The Matrix." The results are very interesting. There are two buildings facing each other with many floors and their respective roofs. There are plenty of repeaters everywhere, and you'll never be short on amunition. There are also some secret areas... I tested it last week with 5 friends, and it is very balanced; we spent 4 hours in it and it never got boring! See it also at http://www.benkenoby.com ! For 2-11 players.
New MotS Mod: Guns of Bob - Kedri @ 2:27 PM
File: Guns of Bob
Author: Darth Bob
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: A new mod, with new screens, skins, weapons, and a test level. The weapons include an E-10 Energy Shotgun, a Laser Gun, a Destroyer Gun, and more.

The Test Level is a Science Lab with a few creatures in it. Also, the soldier and bounty hunter classes have been upgraded to be more dominant than the rest. Special thanks go to Gonk and DarkMaul2.
New Jedi Knight Multiplayer Level: Scorched Lands - Kedri @ 2:30 PM
File: Scorched Lands
Author: TGE_Connor0
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: This is a small multiplayer level set on a volcanic planet. It has several lava pools and streams, some high areas for snipers, and some cave areas for dueling. This is a gunning level that doesn't have ninety rail detonators in one place, so it should be fun to play. This is my first released level, so please use the commenting system and tell me if you liked it or not.
New Jedi Knight Single Player Level: The New Empire Part 2 - Kedri @ 2:37 PM
File: The New Empire Part 2
Author: Chris Swan
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: This is the sequel to The New Empire, which can be downloaded from here. It is recommended that you play The New Empire first so that you understand the story better. This level is split into three parts, all set on a new Imperial ship, and provides a lot of gameplay time. It contains a number of puzzles, cutscenes, new enemies, new weapons, and loads of other stuff never before seen in an SP level, such as coloured light corona effects, lots of breakable scenery and an escalator.

New Jedi Knight Mod: Ninja Kage 7.0 - Kedri @ 5:46 PM
    File: Ninja Kage 7.0
    Author: ShadowX
    Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: My Ninja Kage skin with my voice acting replaces Kyle Katarn:

    • Many of the normal characters are now zombies -- SP and MP
    • Five new ninja besides Kage (kah-gay; shadow) for MP games: Hayashi (ha-yah-she; forest/nature), Gouka (goh-ka; hell fire), Denkou (den-koh; lightning), Hyougen (he-yoh-gen; ice/snow field), and Shiro (she-row; white)
    • Authentic Ninja To (nin-ja toe; ninja sword) with custom moves and bloody slashes
    • The sword is much more realistic -- all moves do greater damage and can be swung faster
    • When armed with the sword, you go into "stealth mode" which makes all of your footsteps silent
    • An unused stab animation for the sword has been added and adjusted
    • Once you swing the sword for the first time, it is able to inflict damage to anything and anyone with a mere touch -- a feature that SHOULD have been in JK in the first place!
    • Authentic Kunai (koo-n'eye; ninja throwing knives) replace the Thermal Detonators, and are able to chop off limbs and heads in SP games
    • You can decapitate Stormtroopers sometimes in SP games with the sword or kunai
    • Instead of smoke trails appearing when you chop off an arm or head, blood flies about
    • Authentic Shuriken (shoo-ree-ken; ninja throwing stars) replace the Bryar Pistol
    • Sharp, spiked caltrops for injuring pursuers replace the Stormtrooper Rifle
    • Kick while holding any weapon. It isn't just one single hit like a punch -- it's six hit points in an arc!
    • Escape danger by doing an evasive back handspring
    • Use the Grappling Hook to reach far-off places
    • Force Blind is replaced with Force Push (pushes everyone in sight)
    • Force Seeing and Persuasion have less annoying/stealthier noises
    • Force Lightning is now ninja lightning magic that rains from the sky, surrounding you, as well as lancing forward from your hands
    • Force Destruction is now Crimson Rain, falling from directly above you and scattering anyone and anything all around you
    • Start the game equipped with shuriken, caltrops, kunai, ninja to, IR goggles, field light, grappling hook, and full shields
    • You can stick to and jump up walls as long as they're not vertical or leaning in your direction
    • Many character animations are improved or totally redone

    SWTTC Updates - blujay @ 7:44 PM

First of all, the status page has been completely revamped so that it'll give you a better idea of what's done. Each level has a page to itself where you'll find a level history, progress report and new screenshots.

Make sure you drop by the Mos Eisley page to see the unveiling of it's fantastic new look.

We have also added a brand new feature for your enjoyment. Over the next few weeks, there will be a series of interviews conducted with the staff by you the fans. Our first installment will feature yours truly interviewed by Ro Wan. An ironic twist indeed. To apply to be an interviewer, send an email to swttc@hotmail.com telling us the reasons why. You have total control over the questions asked but whether or not you can get some new information out of us is up to you. Each interview with the members will appear on the team page. Read the first gripping installment here.

The members page has been brought up to date as well. Keep an eye on it over the coming weeks because each member will be given his own page. They will have free reign over what they put on display. It will be very interesting to see what everyone puts up. We may even get to see some pictures of the team.
    So, take a look.

Massassi Wars: A New Hope - Archimedes @ 4:41 PM
If you thought Spaceballs was the worst spoof of Star Wars you would ever see, think again. The folks over at The Admiral's Command Chamber have constructed a hilarious spin-off of Star Wars involving many of the Star Wars gaming community. Will the evil Massassi Empire, with the Emperor Brian, Darth Juztyn, and Grand Moff Kedri, be able to destroy one of the last standing SP communities with their new superweapon, The Massassi Level Pack 4? Or will Chris Swanwalker and Princess Matthew be able to retrieve its plans for destruction and hand them over to the capable hands of the Rebellion? This involves more people in the community than you think, so be sure to head on over and read all about it.

Hideki, the owner of Millennium, turned 19 today. I would like to wish him a happy birthday from all of us here on the Massassi staff.
Level Design Article - Brian @ 6:20 AM
Blue's News pointed out a great article on Gamasutra called The Art and Science of Level Design. It was originally published @ the 2000 Game Developers Conference. It talks about the ever-expanding role of level designers in the industry, rules for designers to live by, techniques, and even what the future may hold. It's definitely a great read. Here's a snip to get you interested.
    Risk Incentive
In single player design, there are oodles of ways a designer can utilize this time tested technique to let the gamer make his own decisions about how much trouble he's going to get himself into for treasure.

That's the beauty of risk incentive. The player weighs the risk; he assesses the challenge, and gets to make a decision. He feels like he's in control, and the designer provides him with a choice.

For example, in a traditional shooter the designer might place ammunition or health below a pair of sentry turrets. The turrets can easily be avoided by crawling behind a pair of desks, however if the player wants to make a dash for the goodies it is his choice. Therefore, if the guns rip him to shreds and he screws up he blames himself, not the designers.
New CTF Help File - Brian @ 2:05 PM
SavageX was kind enough to send us this Capture the Flag Help File that explains how to set up the CTF cogs. This will surely help those of you working on levels for the CTF level contest...

    Changes at Elyas's Domain - Hebedee @ 6:16 PM
I got an email from Wolfy, or "Elyas Machera," concerning his site, Elyas's Domain a day or two ago, and since I'm lazy, I didn't post it until now. Here it is:
Wasssssup!? I've closed the single player aspect of the AlieNations Modification. With the assistance of Lt. Greywolf, he and I will be releasing the AlieNations MP Modification. No other author's material from the original mod will be used. If you click on the Projects section of my site, you will find screenshots pertaining to my new project, "The Downfall of JuzSoft."
I think its pretty funny that he's making a level surrounding Juztyn, but thats just me, so go check it out for yourself.

    It's Alive! - Brian @ 2:38 PM
Okay, folks, here's the deal. Currently, the Massassi.net server is on the fritz. When it's up, it's got DNS problems and whatnot, so it's very difficult for some users to get to our various sections and hosted sites. I would appreciate it very much if you guys could spread the word that Massassi is NOT closed, and that we are doing our absolute best to solve this problem.

That's issue #1. Issue #2 has to do with the possible closing of Massassi due to lack of funding. Basically, UGO has cut the sites pay by 75%, so the result is that we don't have enough money to pay for the server and bandwidth. I am currently working on a solution to this problem. You can read more about it here. Please do not email me regarding this problem unless you can provide a T-1 for us free of charge (and I'm guessing that's nobody). I currently have a billion things going on, and I don't need the distractions. Thanks for your patience, either way, this problem should be solved shortly.
    Forums - Brian @ 2:39 PM
Some people can't access the forums due to various DNS problems. For now, please use the IP address (even if you can access the subdomain, the cookies will work better if you use the IP): http://216.105.160.32/.

AKPiggott told me on the chat room that The Admirals Command Chamber now has a feature of his current project, an SP level called Tales of a Mercenary 2(ToaM2). Here's what Ryan had to say about it.
I'm pleased to anounce our newest featured level: "Tales of a Mercenary Chapter 2", by Anthony Piggott. The information included about this level sounds interesting, so be sure to check out the feature for screenshots and a progress report. (Note: This feature is the first in our newly-revamped features section. The rest of the site will be completing a similar upgrade within a short time, but until then some of the links on the new pages may not work correctly with the remnants of the old pages. Please bear with us while we roll out the enhanced site sections. Thanks!)
Be sure to check out TACC's feature for Tales of a Mercenary 2.

Updates at SWTTC - Hebedee @ 1:00 PM
Earl at the Star Wars Trilogy Total Conversion updated the day before yesterday, announcing a new staff member, updated level features, new level pages, as well as a cry for help. Earl said a couple things. Here is a clip of the news post.
I have been terribly disappointed with the response to our interview feature. There will be no further interviews without your participation. We have had only one submission and that came from a fellow editor working on the other big TC in the works, TPMTC. We started the feature because we thought you may enjoy the insight, but if we receive no entries then it will be scrapped. To be an interviewer then write to swttc@hotmail.com.

I end again with a cry for help. We are expanding this TC to include ship levels and need dedicated people to work on all aspects of it. We still have some levels that need editors as well, so if you are an expert cogger, texture artist, level editor and wish to become part of a great project, then send a sample of your work to the above address.
If you have any skills that they could use, or just want to check out their levels, go to the Star Wars Trilogy Total Conversion website.

Description: Medium sized level for 2-4 players. There are a lot of traps that are meant to naturally come into gameplay. One trap is an elevator that crushes you if you fall (or get pushed) into a pit. Around this pit are several air ducts that, when entered, send you up and spit you out or pin you up so that other players can kill you with a switch that sends thermal detonators up the shaft. There is a damaging floor that can be turned on and off. There's also a door that traps players under water. There are lots of secret areas too (one of which leads to another trap...). Read the readme!
