Star Wars Battleground - Archimedes @ 3:47 PM
JBF of Jedi Nights has sent word of the following article in PC Gamer.
Many of you might know that PC Gamer has dug up some info on LucasArts latest RTS title, Star Wars Battleground. For those out there who haven't seen the article or whom may not own the latest PC Gamer edition, I have scanned in some pictures of the full article. Please note that each image file is around the 200k mark. It may take a while to load on some connections.

DCM #74 - Kedri @ 6:57 PM
It's good to see Al back in the swing of things: a brand new installment of Diary of a Crazed Mimbanite is available at his site for your perusal. For best results, an intense, shameful depth of SW knowledge may be required. Many thanks to Clappy for dropping us a line with the news.

Massassi Web Based Email - Brian @ 11:22 AM
I've been getting a lot of reports that people have not been able to access their web based email. This is no surprise, simply read the email notes at the top. For those of you that chose not to heed my original warning, you are probably now not able to access your mail at all. Furthermore, all mail sent to whatever@massassi.com is now being returned undelivered.

Well, for those of you that have important things in your email box, yet chose not to switch your email, you can try the following URL. This URL will hopefully allow you to access your mail and forward anything you need to keep to a different email address. You still will not be able to receive any new email - there's nothing I can do about that. Anyway, here's the URL: http://massassi.mail.everyone.net/.

If you don't understand what I'm talking about, please read these email notes.

Now Bond wears a tux, and almost all of the weapons are new 3dos. Please note that this is just a Beta release, and please treat it as a work-in-progress. I just wanted to share what I had so far.

File: Resident Garden
Author: BoL_Bojangles_5
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2

The water thing in the level is supposed to be like it is, it isn't an error. This is my first real level so dont be too hard on me. There's plenty of ammo and secret areas, and it also has places for saber duels.

Updates at DoubleD's Deathstar - Kedri @ 8:48 PM
DoubleD has been busy as a bee over at his site, DoubleD's Deathstar. Among the latest additions are screenshots for his latest project, Darth Maul: The Apprentice, and a video with actual JK footage demonstrating his glowstaff in action. Here's a quick screenshot:

Be sure to check out his stuff when you can.

So be sure to check it out.
DCM #75 - Kedri @ 9:04 PM
Al's rolled out another installment in his fresh, home-baked series of Diary of a Crazed Mimbanite comic strips. I find a bit of vindication in this one, as I myself was asking the exact same question while sitting through Episode I. Many thanks to Mantis_Dragon for providing us with the heads-up.
DFLev Resurfaces - Kedri @ 9:16 PM
I know a few of you (and I) have been curious about what happened to DFLev; the guys kind of dropped off the face of the earth there for a bit. Well, Dan Gast sent us word earlier about what's been going, and moreover, what's in store:
It's been about four months or so since the last bit of news came out of the DFLev website, but a lot has changed since then. Recently, a new website was acquired. (http://www.dflev.f2s.com) instead of the old, long address. Despite the inactivity of the site, the members of the group itself have been doing work on Jedi Knight mods.

If you've played the Starfighters MOD, any of the version from 1.0 to 3.5, you can expect the final version to be released sometime within the next two months. Starfighters 4.0 will include different firing modes, more ships than ever before, and even new weapons!

The other new project happening at DFLev is the Invasion! MOD Levels we're putting together. The COGs were posted on the site, and DFLev saw those COGs as pure oppertunity. We've based a whole new kind of JK Gameplay off of it, and we are STILL thanking the guy who thought it up and posted the COGs.

For more information on both of these projects, please visit the DFLev website at http://www.dflev.f2s.com and expect the release of these two projects to happen in the near future! Until next time, c-ya around!
Elyas's Domain Returns - Kedri @ 9:24 PM
So Wolfy hasn't been sitting around chatting all day after all! Check it out:
Elyas's Domain has re-opened its doors, finally up and running. The Current Projects section now contains screenshots of my newest project, Life of a Merchant, or LoaM. I've uploaded my enemy pack - which should (hopefully) appear here for download. Until then, get it at my site.

There is also a small pond that provides an alternate enterance to the tunnels. Secrets are also hidden throughout the level. There are no Force boosts, therefore, Jedi play may be restricted. I also left out the carb gun along with seekers. As it's not a huge level it creates fast and intense games. Any number of players will make the level worth playing.

Lucasarts E3 Lineup - Brian @ 4:20 PM
Well, today Lucasarts announced the final of 5 games they will be showing at E3. Rumors have been flying about DF3 being created by Raven Software, but apparently they're either untrue, or at least LEC won't be showing the game at E3. So be sure to click this incredibly boring link if you are interested in seeing the mass of uninspired console games and perhaps one mediocre PC game that will be released in the forseeable future.

File: Mandalorian Armored Combat [M.A.C.]
Author: EAH_CL0wN
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: Mandalorian Armored Combat allows you to play as a Mandalor warrior. Also many weapon upgrades and new weapon models are in M.A.C. You will also have several new characters to choose from. Secondary fire has been added to weapons that normally had none. Primary fire has been left untouched in all but the Bryar pistol, in order to preserve game play. Sequencer, Rail Detonator and Bowcaster have been left untouched (some weapons are just too fun to change) After you have installed M.A.C. make sure to assign hotkeys to the new features. Some of the new equipment can not be assigned a hotkey and is only available by browsing through your items inventory.

Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: Two bases/forts and a maze between them. Great level for dueling between the bases. No base has the advantage. Lots of supplies in the main floor arena, but not too many. Look for a secret in the Nagglfar. This level works fine with just two people and can handle many many more!! Great for team play, or Free-For-All.

More Lucsarts @ E3 - Brian @ 2:45 PM
It's been pointed out on the forums (thread) that the slot previously empty on the Lucasarts E3 site now has a date of May 17, 2001. This seems to indicate that they are planning on announcing another game. We can but hope this is the long awaited sequel to Jedi Knight and Dark Forces. It's been rumored that a sequel is in development by Raven Software, the geniuses behind Soldier of Fortune and Heavy Metal: FAKK2 (Correction: I mistakenly said that Raven did FAKK2 - that's incorrect, Ritual developed FAKK2 - Raven is also responsible for Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force and the Hexen/Heretic series).

If this is the case, I'm most definitely looking forward to this game, and Massassi will indeed focus on being a central resource for all things related to it. If it is not the case that Raven or another 3rd party company is working on the game, there is still hope that Lucasarts itself may come up with something incredible. Either way, if it's possible to edit, you can bet Massassi will support it.

Finally, if it turns out to be a sequel to JK, or another 3d action game (preferably FPS), I will take back my comments made earlier (last week some time I believe) about their "boring" E3 lineup and lack of inspired games.
Star Wars: Jedi Outcast: Jedi Knight II - Brian @ 2:47 PM
Hebedee sent me a link to TheForce.net Games which states the following:
BIG NEWS! LucasArts has announced "Star Wars, Jedi Outcast, Jedi Knight II". It's being developed with Raven Software on a modified Quake III engine. It's expected to be released next Spring.
The official announcement is expected tomorrow. I certainly hope this is no sham!
Vote JK2! - Hebedee @ 3:09 PM
Voodoo Extreme has created a poll that involves something like "Which Game Are You Looking Forward To Most At E3?". Anyway, I thought that since this is a Jedi Knight site and I am stoked about this announcement coming tomorrow, I'd post a link to it. Go here and vote!

Jedi Outcast: Jedi Knight II Officially Announced - Brian @ 8:51 AM
generalchang sent word that Lucasarts has updated their E3 page with the official announcement of Jedi Outcast: Jedi Knight II. You can read the summary and when you're done, hit the features list (I'd link to them but it's a javascript link...). Well heck, here's some good info:
In the tradition of the multi-award-winning Jedi Knight, rebel agent Kyle Katarn returns in exhilarating first-person action. Several years have passed since Kyle avenged his father's death and saved the Valley of the Jedi from Jerec and his band of Dark Jedi. Allowing his Force powers to languish for fear of falling to the dark side, Kyle entrusted his lightsaber to Luke Skywalker, vowing never to use it again. But when a new and menacing threat to the galaxy emerges, Kyle knows he must reclaim his past in order to save his future. Jedi Outcast is being developed in partnership with Activision's critically acclaimed devloper Raven Software. Players assume the role of Kyle as they employ a unique mix of weapons, Force powers and your lightsaber in both single- and multiplayer modes.

  • Expanded and enhanced use of the lightsaber features a slew of attack and defense moves
  • Tap into the powers of the Force including Jump, Push, Jedi Mind Tricks and more
  • Employ combat or stealth, depending on the situation. When a fight is necessary, be at the ready with an arsenal of weapons: stun baton, Bryar blast pistol, blaster rifle to name but a few.
  • Explore breathtaking Star Wars locales--Cloud City, the Jedi Academy on Yavin 4, Nar Shaddaa, the smugglers' moon--plus some never-before-seen locations
  • Two multiplayer modes: Jedi training and team-based cooperative play
  • Developed in conjunction with the critically acclaimed Raven Software using an advanced Quake IIIā„¢ engine
So far I haven't seen any screenshots, but rest assured - as soon as we find some, we'll post links here.
Star Wars Galaxies Screenshots - Brian @ 9:10 AM
Goofz posted on the forums that Lucasarts has released the first SW: Galaxies screenshots. They look amazing. The page also notes that you can find more shots at both StarWars.com and StarWarsGalaxies.com, although I couldn't find them as of this writing.

Espo Enemies - Brandon @ 5:07 PM
MikeC sent word that he has updated his site with three Mysteries of the Sith enemies based on Al MacDonald's Espo skin. This time it includes ones armed with a pistol, one with a repeater, and a punching version.
GameSpot Jedi Knight II E3 Preview - Brandon @ 5:31 PM
I saw over on Blue's News an article on GameSpot about Jedi Outcast: Jedi Knight II at E3. Here's a little bit of the article:
Another new feature in Jedi Knight II is the game's buddy system. Through the course of the single-player campaign, you'll run into several NPCs, some of whom you'll be able to partner with. During the demonstration, LucasArts spawned in one such "buddy" while Katarn was facing a lightsaber-wielding boss character, and the ensuing fight looked remarkably like the spectacular fight between Qui Gon, Obi Wan, and Darth Maul in Episode I. Raven, no stranger to visual splendor, is incorporating a lot of eye candy into the game as well. Lightsabers leave red-hot scorch marks in any surface they touch, including floors, walls, and pillars. Additionally, the developers have implemented the GHOUL 2 animation system from Soldier of Fortune II into Jedi Knight II, and they've doubled the polygon capacity of the Quake III engine.
Gamesmania Jedi Knight II E3 Preview - Brandon @ 2:29 PM
ZeroXcape let us know about an article on Gamesmania about Jedi Outcast: Jedi Knight II at E3. Once again, here's a snippet:
Environment effects are great too. There's glass that Kyle can leap through. This demo had a section where Kyle dueled another Jedi on a polished floor, with crystal clear reflections of the combatants and their sabers. It looked like a set piece from one of the movies. You can also damage the walls with the lightsaber, making angry yellow and red scars in a shower of sparks. If you stand too close to the wall when using an elevator, you leave a straight line all the way up between floors. The damage eventually disappears, but it sure looks cool in the meanwhile.
This is an interesting article, so go check it out!

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Brian @ 7:14 PM
Blue's News announced that this article on GameSpot is where Lucasarts has chosen to reveal the title of the upcoming Star Wars role playing game in development by Bioware (you know... the creators of the Baldur's Gate series). Here's a small snippet, but be sure to hit the full article.
The game takes place approximately 4,000 years before the Star Wars movies. However, space travel still exists, and the universe is still very technologically advanced. You'll traverse worlds like Tatooine, which will look very familiar to you and yet contain enough subtle cues to remind you that these are ancient times.
More JK2 Info - Brian @ 7:31 PM
Just some small bits here, but if you're like me, you're itching to get your hands on whatever you can.

  • The Gamesmania article linked to below was submitted by ZeroXcape, a staff member of JediKnight.net, one of the original Jedi Knight sites. Apologies on behalf of the staff here for not including that link. By the way: the preview lists the release date as Spring 2001, which is incorrect. The official projected release date is Spring 2002.
  • TheForce.net Games is reporting that JK2 will have a strong tie to Episode II. Thanks to MrRavenX of Phoenix Knights for this link.
  • RobZilla noted that IGN has posted an interesting preview of JK2. It's basically a recap of the known information, as well as a description of the in-game footage they were able to get a look at.
Jedi Knight II Preview @ GameSpy - Brian @ 7:03 AM
GameSpy has posted their preview of Jedi Knight II, based on the sample level Lucasarts is showing at E3. Something very interesting that I haven't seen mentioned before (although that by no means it hasn't been).
The game will also use the same GHOUL 2 code used for locational hit detection being developed for Raven's other title, Soldier of Fortune 2. "You can tell if you hit them in the head", explains Pettit, "and if you hit them in the head, they die instantly." If you've played the original Soldier of Fortune and severed someone's arm with a rifle shot, you'll have a good idea what to expect in Jedi Outcast when you hack away at enemies with your lightsaber.
LucasArts Chat - Brandon @ 9:01 AM
LucasArts is holding a Star Wars Gaming chat on Wednesday, May 23rd at 6pm PST. This chat will feature Haden Blackman, who is "actively involved with the Star Wars Galaxies project." The chat room opens at 5pm PST and questions begin at 6pm PST.

Starfighter on PC? - Brian @ 1:36 AM
Voodoo Extreme noted that IGN confirmed a PC version of Star Wars: Starfighter. Click the link for more information. Thank you Lucsarts for supporting the PC platform!

As a side note, these are the titles currently in development for the PC: Jedi Outcast: Jedi Knight II (FPS/in development by Raven Software), Star Wars: Battlegrounds (RTS/AOE engine), Star Wars Galaxies (MMORPG/in development by Verant), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (RPG/in development by BioWare), and finally, Starfighter, being ported from the PS2 version. As you can see, most, if not all, of these titles are licensed out to 3rd party development houses. I personally applaud Lucasarts for taking these steps - having Star Wars games being developed by other development houses that are leaders in their respective genres is a great move.

Jedi Knight II Preview @ JediKnight.net - Brian @ 7:22 PM
JediKnight.net sends word that they've posted a preview of Jedi Outcast: Jedi Knight II. It goes into a lot of detail with descriptions of actual gameplay, so be sure to read it.
JK2 Developer E3 Comments - Brian @ 7:42 PM
Voodoo Extreme pointed out a very interesting .plan update by Raven Software's Jake Simpson. Click the link for the whole thing (good read), but here's a small clip.
I got to demo Jedi Knight II for Justin Chin at the Lucas Arts booth. That was a cool moment. He seemed to be into what we are doing, which is important I think. Trying to continue the whole spirit of the original game is very important to us. The reaction we got from almost everyone for both SOF2 and JKII was extremely gratifying to be honest, and makes some of the long nights worth it.
Forum Info - Brian @ 10:14 PM
With the help of Digital, I tweaked the forums a bit to get rid of that annoying content-type line that has been appearing for the past few weeks. Unfortunately, this may invalidate some cookies and/or lose track of which threads you've visited. If this happens to you, don't worry, it's only temporary, and should be fixed after you post a message and come back at a later time. If you run into any other problems, please let me know so I can look into them.
More Forum Info - Brian @ 12:28 AM
If you visit the forum you will notice that older messages have been removed. Don't worry, this isn't some drastic drop in traffic or a forum bug. Recon Gamer, our host, has asked that all hosted sites prune their forums and temporarily disable the search option because the server is getting bogged down during peak times. Hopefully this will solve the problem. In an attempt to remove clutter, I have also removed the forums that are rarely used.
Lucasarts Interview - Brian @ 2:37 PM
The International House of Mojo (Lucasarts fan site) has an interview with Simon Jeffery, president of Lucasarts. A lot of interesting topics are discussed, so go read it! Here's a small sample from the first page.
Spaff: A lot of people are annoyed at the massive amount of Star Wars games and the so far lack of the said "50/50" ratio of Star Wars to original titles.

Simon Jeffery: Its still absolutely our intention and strategy to be 50 percent Star Wars and 50 percent non-Star Wars. You've got to remember that the games we're showing now have been in development for quite a while and at E3 next year there will be a lot of new, original titles that are not Star Wars. It just takes a long time to get there. We're not ready to say what they are yet because I think that there's not point in trying to get people over-excited about something that they won't be able to see for 12 to 18 months. Yeah, we could have shown some [original] games we're building in-house now, but then everyone would be upset at us for showing games too early. Its difficult to please everyone all the time, I guess.
Resignation - Archimedes @ 3:25 PM
Before I begin, I'd just like to say that the time I have spent here on the staff and among the staff has been one of the best experiences in my life. I've learned so many things, met so many new people, and made so many new friends. I can only thank Brian, Massassi, its staff, and you for making this time so great.

That being said, please understand that I don't like doing anything half-buttocked; which, if you haven't noticed, could describe the effort I've put forth for the past few weeks. I'm becoming more and more busy with High School, extracurricular activities, friends, and whatnot. Rather than try to slide by with both, I'm just going to let go of one, which is, as I see it, best for both me and the community.

I most definitely can still be found on the forums, in the chat, and at my email address. In closing, I'd just like to say that is has been an honor, a privilege, and a pleasure to have worked with the staff and for you.

DarkJedi86 will be missed - Takimoto @ 3:33 PM
A great light has gone out from among us. Yet, the eternal flame of his Jedi spirit will burn on in our hearts. It is during times like this that we must reflect upon the true value of life and hold close that which we hold dear.

Okay, enough sappy crap. DarkJedi86, Archimedes, whatever you wanna call yourself, you'll be missed by the rest of the staff here at Massassi. You were always up to beta-test whatever I was working on. And no matter how much it sucked you'd always call it cool. I'll miss having an ego boost like that, and fear that I will get people's honest opinions from here on out. Anyways, I just wanted to post a farewell note and sing you a goodbye song. Okay, just the note. - Peace.

Jedi Outcast In-Game Footage! - Brian @ 3:40 PM
ZeroXcape from JediKnight.net let me know that they have actual gameplay footage of Jedi Outcast: Jedi Knight II available for download. It's a very short clip, but it shows off a lot of action - certainly this game is one that's going to rock!
Windows2000 + JediKnight + DX8 = Headache - Takimoto @ 3:44 PM
On another note, I'm going to try to start pulling my own weight around here. Recently while messing around with Windows2000, I ran across a launch problem with Jedi Knight. I know some of you are probably saying to yourselves, "Why is this fool trying to run games on an NT based OS in the first place?" To them I'd say, "Because."

Well, anyways, if you're trying to run Jedi Knight on Windows2000 with DirectX 8.0 installed, then you might run across the problem of the JK launcher telling you to reinstall DirectX 5 for Win9x/ME. If this is the case, just right click on your link in the programs menu, go to properties, and tell it to refer to the JK.exe (or JKM.exe if you're playing Sith) instead of the launcher program. And bing-badda-boom, there you have it. It runs fine on Windows2000, and no more problems.

Another JK2 Preview - Brian @ 4:15 PM
Daeron the Nerfherder sends word that Action Vault has posted a preview of Jedi Knight 2, based of course off the E3 demonstration. One important fact is a confirmation of light-side only play in single player mode.

JK2 E3 Movie + JediKnight.net Status - Brian @ 3:34 PM
We posted word yesterday that JediKnight.net had released actual gameplay footage from the E3 build of Jedi Knight 2. Unfortunately, they got hit pretty hard and their network is currently down. They are working as fast as possible to bring it back up, but we have no word yet on how long it will take.

Because the video is no longer available on their site, I am posting it here for download. Please be nice to our server by sending it manually to all your friends over ICQ or email rather than forwarding them here to download it! Important Note: This is the exact same video that was on JediKnight.net yesterday, so if you already saw it, please do not download it again! Thanks!

Update: We will be posting all mirrors of this file, so if you can upload it somewhere, please email me a link and I will put you here. This file is 343KB.

LucasArts Chat Transcript - Brandon @ 10:40 AM
LucasArts has posted a transcript of the Star Wars Gaming Chat that took place Wednesday the 23rd. There are some comments about Jedi Outcast and this:
ZeroXcape: What's your relation with Fan sites like jediknight.net, massassi.net, and mixnmojo.com? Do you ever give them insider information?

Haden Blackman: Personally, I visit those sites every day, as do many people at LucasArts. :) As a company, we're trying to involve the fan sites more and more. At the same time, we don't want to "scoop" our official sites, like LucasArts.com or StarWarsGalaxies.com.
Thanks to Gelynx for the heads up.

File: Stealth Ninjas
Author: X_Patch_M/Shadow_Of_SN

Description: This is a total conversion of the game. It is like 'Ninja Kage' and is based upon it. I have used many of ShadowX's cogs and added my own, as well as some new skins. The Saber fighting is almost unchanged from JK's original fighting but is more powerful. There is also an added 'Stealth Camo Toggle' which is very cool.

New Legends Movie - Brian @ 7:11 PM
Remember New Legends? It's the martial arts game from developer Infinite Machine - formed by ex-Lucasarts guru Justin Chin (worked on DF and JK). New Legends was originally a PC title based on the Unreal engine, but disappointingly moved to be an x-box exclusive title. While browsing for some Red Faction clips, I came across this video footage of New Legends. Although I don't like their decision to create an x-box exclusive title, the game does look pretty interesting, so if you've been following the development of the game, or if you're just interested in seeing what ex-JK team members are up to, be sure to check it out.
E3 Footage Explained - Brandon @ 4:35 PM
ZeroXcape sends word that Ryan Fulton, the man that brought us the E3 Jedi Outcast movie, has been stopping by JediKnight.net's JK2 Forum. He's been explaining what he was able to see of Jedi Outcast at E3. It's pretty cool, especially this:
Another force power that I got to see included the ability to throw the light saber. I was impressed with the fact that in one scene there were multiple entrances to a room. The light saber was thrown and even though it went around a corner when I ran into the next room it appeared through another entrance and returned to my hand. Very cool effect!
Check it out!

Etc. - A Bit of History - Brian @ 1:30 AM
If you're interested in seeing what some of the original artwork for this site looked like, visit this thread on the discussion forum.
Screenshot of the Day - Brian @ 1:38 AM
Just wanted to publicly thank David McHale, the guy who has been updating the screenshot of the day lately. It's a thankless job, since nobody really knows who's actually posting it. David is a regular over on the Command Chamber forums - the idea is to get some recognition to the folks and their work over there, as well as on the Massassi Showcase.
Another one bites the dust... - Brian @ 12:46 PM
Hebedee has joined the ranks of former staff members. This happens shortly after both Archimedes and Juztyn decided to part ways. You may be wondering... What's going on in there to cause so many staff members to up and quit? Well here's the story, straight from the horse's mouth. I've been cracking down on 'inactive' staff members and encouraging those that don't contribute much (or anything) to move on. It's not that we dislike eachother - it's that I'm tired of having inactive staff members that enjoy the benefits of being on the staff (massassi.net email address, ops in the chat room, 'Administrator' status on the forums, reading all the entertaining staff@massassi.net email, etc.) without shouldering any of the responsibilities.

While they all contributed immensly during their active periods (and I, as well as all the readers of this site, appreciate this fact), I just felt that we needed to clean things up a bit around here.

So... That brings the number of active staff members @ Massassi to a grand total of... 3! That would be Kedri (who has been bogged down in finals and work the past couple of weeks, but has also contributed some amazing stuff for release in the near future - more on that later), Brandon, who takes care of the mats and 3dos, as well as some general news, and myself. blujay is still around, but taking a much-deserved break. No word yet on whether he'll rejoin the ranks of the active or fade into the shadows of inactivity.

So this begs the question... Will we be hiring any new staff members? That is a most certain yes, but perhaps not immediately. I have a few people in mind from the chat room that I will be approaching soon, but the fact is that we have a HUGE project going on here behind-the-scenes that should rear it's beautiful face in the near future (within a month, I'd say). At that point is when we'll most likely make final decisions on staff members and whatnot.

Note: there will be no 'open application' process for getting these new staff members - that's something that simply hasn't worked well in the past. Frankly, I can't tell whether someone would make a good staff member through a few emails. I will personally be picking the staff members from the people that have consistently contributed to the JK community over the past months and years.
Tweak Me Up! - Takimoto @ 3:03 PM
This isn't exactly Jedi Knight related, but it has to do with anyone who owns any version of Windows (95, 98, 2000, NT, ME), so I think you guys will find it helpful. There's a little program called TweakUI (for tweaking the User Interface). It allows you to change numerous settings in Windows. You can disable your Windows startup screen, change the speed that your menus open, and a mess with a whole slew of otherwise untouchable options.

Here's a personal example, I recently uninstalled a program, yet it still remained in my Add/Remove applet in the Control Panel. TweakUI lets you even get rid of problem programs like that. And you'd expect to pay what; $19.95 for an awesome utility such as this? But no folks, this program can be yours for the low-low price of a 110k download. So go grab it now directly from Microsoft's TweakUI Page. After you guys use it, tell Brian Lozier how much you like it, as he's still using an outdated version.

Spyware - Is Your Computer Safe? - Takimoto @ 3:22 PM
If you're like me, you've gotten a few off-the-wall emails every now and then from people you don't even know, and they're advertising products you don't even care about. Ever wonder how they get your email address in the first place? Allow me to tell for you now a story of deception and intrigue, and unveil your eyes to the evils that lay hidden in shareware.

Here's the typical story: You download a free program, try it out, and either like it and keep it or uninstall it and never think about it again. But did you know that many programs have buddies that they invite along onto your system, whether you leave the original on there or not?

This is called Spyware because it uses installations and/or registry entries into your computer to leave resident applications that send people information about you. Most commonly, it records your email addresses and when you're connected to the internet it sends this to a database where others can draw from to send bogus ads.

I know this situation sounds hopeless, but fear not good citizens! There are those that would stand up and fight against such diabolical underhandedness. One such group is LavaSoft, who makes a program called Ad Aware, which is available free for public use. I installed it on my computer, and found 7, count 'em, 7 Spyware programs in my system. Take into account that I'd only been using my current hard drive for a month, so there's no telling how many hidden utilities there are floating around on older computers.

So, without further delay, get thee to Download.com and rid yourself of this high-tech cancer.
