I have just implemented a new news script on Massassi. Because of this, you may see some errors on the main page. I am in the process of working out all the final bugs, but that can't be done without going live and seeing what happens. So here it is!

This was e-mailed to us a while back, but through my stupidity I forgot to post it. It seems that a fellow by the name of Lou Graziani has constructed a timeline of the events in Dark Forces and its characters. This must have taken a lot of time and patience, so go pay this wonderful history a well-deserved visit.
Two New Tutorials Added - Kedri @ 10:43 AM
Keeping myself occupied whilst the level posting script is polished up, I've posted a pair of tutorials that came our way from the modestly-named JEDMaster. The first is a great tutorial on creating ribbed domes. Here's a small screenshot of the finished product to pique your curiosity. Pretty! The second one isn't really a tutorial so much as an alternative technique for sloping corners in your levels. To the seasoned editors out there it may seem like a no-brainer, but you never know who may find it an invaluable tip. Thanks to JEDMaster for sending his stuff in.

Description: This is a multiplayer saber level. It is a tomb of the Sith Priest Seryl Cann. It consists of two floors. The lower floor has five rooms with two elevators leading to the top floor. The top floor is a rectangular room with the Sith Priest's grave in the middle. This level is intended for 2-6 players.

JK Beta Testing Group - Brian @ 12:34 AM
After a pretty long period of down time, the Jedi Knight Beta Testing Group is back online. Their design kicks, and it looks like they've finally got an active webmaster to run the show.

This is good for level authors because you can now get your level/mod beta tested by a wide variety of people and computers. I strongly suggest you take advantage of their services.

Also, they're looking for 10 very active beta testers, so if you're interested, hit their page and apply.

A bunch of new textures have been added to our mats section. Big thanks to those people who submit their textures. If you are the artist behind a custom texture or texture pack, please submit! We're really looking to get this section up and running strongly.

Also a big thanks to Brandon who's been handling the mat section since it's reopening. He's going to be showing up a bit on the news as well, so look for it.

As Brian mentioned, I have been handling all the mats since the new mat section was launched in mid April. Since then the mat section has grown to 78 mats in its database. Some of the big contributing authors have been Tee and more recently Kevinator. I'd like to thank these authors for the mats they have sent in and ask anyone else to please send in any mats they have or make. Just follow the instructions here and you'll be on your way!

Well, as the headline implies, I am going out of town. I'll be going with my grandmother up to my cousin's High School graduation, and then I should be staying with her for another week. There was a major error with the Improved Saber Colours JK Mod. Essentially, the sabers were placed in the 3DO/MAT section instead of the MAT/ section, doing nothing to improve the sabers. Jkguy_009 has sent in an updated version of the mod, assuring everyone that this one does indeed work. The update replaces the current file.

Sven Solo sent in a COG script that takes the standard lightning event and extends it with some customizable variables like pulserate and sound. Some spiffy applications pop into my head with this one. It'll work in SP, MP and CTF, but only in Jedi Knight. Thanks to Sven for his submission.

The Dorkfiles has opened their TC/Mod Library, where they catalog all the current TC's and mods in progress for JK and MotS and provide status information and an interest poll. So far it's looking great, so go have a look.
Vampire In Stores - Brian @ 8:35 AM
Non-JK, but good news nonetheless. In case you don't know the story, after Jedi Knight was released, a bunch of LEC employees left and started their own companies (some are at Nihilistic Software and some are at Infinite Machine). Anyway, Nihilistic has just released their first game, Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption. It's a killer 3D role-playing game. I received my pre-order copy yesterday, and I must say, this game is amazing. Word is that it's selling like hotcakes, so if you are going to buy it, be sure to call your local software store before you make the trip.

Levels + Misc Info - Brian @ 1:51 PM
Alright, I updated the levels script to start outputting the "recent levels" list on the main page. As you can see, some of the levels listed there aren't the most recent. Due to a bug in the script, the "date added" time was being updated each time a level entry was edited. This has been fixed, so as more levels are added, that list will correct itself.

Jedi Josh also brought to my attention the fact that the "last updated" line at the top wasn't correct anymore. That has also been fixed. Any other problems, please let me know.

Description: Flashsabers is the first saberglow mod (a mod that puts a translucent glow on the lightsaber) that does not require a 3D accelerator card. It does so by flashing between a "core" mat and a "glow" mat, hence the name. This version includes the Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, Black/White, Purple, and Blue sabers. You also have an option of a black "Sith" or white "Jedi" core. (Note: The glow flashes faster than it appears in the screenshots. Flashes are once per frame, unless your framerate is higher than you monitor's refresh rate.)

Sith Lord sent in an updated version of his Emperor skin mod, which was posted here last week. The revision fixes some colormap problems which were popping up, and he blended the face texture in a bit more. He also provided a new pair of screenshots of the skin. The update replaces the current file.

Tutorials are popping out like hotcakes over at Millennium, one of our hosted sites. This is the fourth of the Sniper tutorials, and is entitled, "How to Implement Sniping". These sniper tutorials are all based off of what Hideki has learned from creating his killer mod, Sniper Arena. Judging from some of the great stuff in Sniper Arena, I'd bet that these tutorials are hot stuff, so I would suggest paying Millennium a well-deserved visit.

Alliance Editing has updated quite a bit. First, they have opened their new tutorial section, along with adding a new tutorial. Next, they have updated the screenshots section with a total of 45 screens. Lastly, they have officially opened the Beta Testing section, which is worth checking out. All in all, I'd say Alliance Editing deserves a visit.

The Ghostbusters TC Spook Demo has been updated. It is now a mere 5.5 megs (compared to the 13 megs of the last version). The only difference is that the new zip file doesn't contain the giant readme that used to be included. This mod was recently reviewed over at the review site and received a 90.

We're starting something new at the Massassi Temple, a Mat Spotlight. Every week or so I'll make a news post announcing who received the Mat Spotlight. The first Mat Spotlight goes to The Big Giant Head with his awesome brickmats file in the brick category.

If you would like to have your mat under the Mat Spotlight send it in! I'll pick the mats from the mat section, choosing different authors from different categories each week. Make sure you follow the submission instructions before you send in your mat. Good luck!

Description: This mod changes all standard weapons except fists. It also changes the IR Googles, and Bacta. A few changes are that the Bryar shoots a grappling hook as secondary fire. The Stormtrooper Rifle is now a sniper rifle. The mines are now a type of futuristic mace (the blinding spray). Primary fire will repel the victim away from you and blind him/her. Secondary fire will charge it up. You can block lasers with the mace, and while it's equipped you can breathe underwater. Most projectiles now travel faster, and I made all the guns "balanced," which means the Stormtrooper rifle won't be more powerful than the Concussion Rifle or anything like that. Don't be fooled by the file size; it's kind of small because I didn't put in a bunch of 3DOs and sound files.

Description: This is a compilation of weapon 3DOs that have been edited to contain invisible hand MATs. What this means is that you can now have a Greedo with green skin on his right fist instead of the default beige/yellow. Importantly, you will have to edit your character's 3DO so that their rhand mesh is visible. If you don't, what will happen is that your character will appear not to have a right fist as it is invisible. E-mail me if you need further help.

Guyver 5 sent in a newer version of his JK MP level Guyver Sanctuary. This sizable update fixes a few bugs, adds a few more buildings and switches out some of the MATs. Glowsaber 3.0 Progress Report - Kedri @ 1:43 PM
One look at Jamontoast's .plan file shows you he's been busy working on the latest version of his infamous Glowsaber Mod. He's posted a few screenshots to whet your visual appetite, including a couple of nifty animated GIFs. They're kinda tiny, but nifty nonetheless. He mentions he's open to new ideas on what else to add to the project, so if you've got any lying around you'd best drop in and let him know about 'em. A tip of the hat to Highlander for the info.

There is a new version of JkEdit (3.06) available at MagicForce.com. This new version contains the following improvements:

· The Expand operation now generates correct split vertices
· Splitting of a surface in any split/expand operation now interpolates vertex light values correctly
· Updating Vertices now interpolates vertex light values correctly
· The Library functions now handles object frames correctly
· The Material in Level dialog now correctly allows for saving to BMP file
· Conveyer belt movements are now rendered correctly

Description: This is not a Canyon Oasis mod. It's a hardcore deathmatch level set in a desert oasis. The level is perfect for NF and FF Guns. There are at least two ways to get to all of the most powerful weapons, and the items are placed quite strategically to keep people from camping. In NF, you can use the water passageways or rail jump to the areas which contain the powerful weapons, and in FF, you can also use the water passageways or just force jump. There are many surfaces in this level that could be used as ramps in FF, alot like the ramps in Battleground Jedi. This level gets better framerates than Canyon Oasis, and has about the same amount of items. This level is good for 2-4 players in both NF and FF. Enjoy.

Description: There's no real set theme or anything to this level. It's somewhat of a mix of different ideas. A canyon, underground cave, and some sort of building complex all mixed together. The level is suitable for 2-4 players. There are no big guns included (i.e. Rail Dets and Concussion Rifles). In my opinion the level is best played on Apprentice Level Force as there are a lot of eh... enclosed areas.

On a side note, this is an updated version of the original level I released in May for the second Massassi level contest. I've just fixed up a few things.

Forum Upgrade Tonight - Brian @ 9:07 PM
Due to the problems we've been having with the forum email, I'm going to upgrade it to the latest version. This will result in a little bit of down time. I do not know how long it will last (since I've never done this before). The idea is that no user accounts or posts will be lost, so that is a good thing. No word yet on exactly what time they will be down, but if you access the forums and they're in the process of being upgraded, you will get a message saying so.

I have upgraded the forum system to the latest version. Not many differences on the surface, though. The only things I can see a difference in is that the ad banner is moved to the top, and there is a smilies legend next to the post text box. I'm now waiting for the test email to come back. If it doesn't work, I'll be in contact with our forum server admin (again) to try to figure out the problem.

Remember: If for some reason you registered and never received a password, please email me directly and I will look it up for you. We've been having problems with the email for a couple of weeks now, so if you've registered in that time, it's likely you never received your password. Also, if you have any problems now that it's been upgraded, please let me know.

So what's in the latest upgrade to the levels section? The ability to add comments to levels. This is very similar to the review site, but since we obviously can't keep up with the number of levels that are submitted, we are now allowing comments in the levels section as well. To post comments, you must first register. This is a very painless process. All we require is a user name, email address and password. Honestly, you can fake the email address if you don't want us to have it (blah@blah.com) - this just means you can't ever look up your password if you lose it (you'll have to register a new user name). If you feel like it, leave feedback in this thread on the forums.

Since it's new, it's very possible that there are some bugs. If you find any, please email me with a description of the problem and the exact URL (copy from address bar in browser) that's giving you problems.

I just added a field to the level display list. It tells you how many comments the level has. You can also now sort the level list by number of comments. On a side note, everything seems to be working pretty well; only one small cosmetic bug was reported, and it's been fixed.

Description: Return of the Empire V.2 is the sequal to Return of the Empire TC (also on Massassi). RotE V.2 has been configured better for MP, but still offers excellent SP gameplay. In SP, you become the dreaded Dark Trooper with his jetpack and Imperial arsenal. MP offers a good balance of weapons. They are not too powerfull (so you don't get nuked as soon as you join the game), but they still pack a good punch. A beautiful skin-pack of Imperials and, an awsome MP level is included as well. The preview is a SP Kyle-Saber mod called "Darth Scorpio". It gives you an awsome skin and the ability to fly. It has great new sounds and a beautiful lightstaff.

That's right... After some discussion on the forums, I've added the ability to edit your post. I've also changed the email display feature to function like the forums (which means email addresses aren't displayed on the actual page, you have to click to get them). This is so our users are protected from the automated email scanners that probe sites so they can spam. Finally, a "Report Abuse" link appears on each post. If you feel someone has posted a comment that breaks our rules, just click the link, and the abuse will be reported directly to the staff. If you have any problems, please let me know.

While surfing around the Code-Alliance's forums, I stumbled across this tutorial on how to edit Jed's resource lists. Some of you may have Ping_Me's Jed_organize.ZIP file, which can be found here, which reorganizes things. By using this tutorial you can also reorganize all of the other resources. So, check it out, and maybe make a new set of files to help editors everywhere organize their Jeds. If you do, be sure to send it in to Massassi so it can be posted for everyone to use.

I've been digging through the levels account trying to make up for Kedri's absence, and I've noticed that a ton of the submissions do not have all the information we require. Remember, all we really want is the type of mod, the name of it, your name, your email, and a brief description. We don't really need your life story or a great big explanation of why you think your dog has been getting sick lately (I admit, we haven't gotten any of these... yet.) Usually we can dig the information out of your emails, but when we've got 20+ levels sitting in the inbox, (which we do,) it gets really really tough. So if you could PLEASE spend that extra second reading the submission instructions We'd be eternally grateful!... Okay, that's the end of my mini-rant, now back to these remaining levels... *sigh*

There is one gun (not to strong) and a revive pack, it was made for sabers NF but experiment, test, and see what you like best. Suited for 2 players but can support 4.

If your level wasn't posted, the most likely culprit is yourself. In case anyone missed it, we now require two (2) screenshots, along with the gob's zip, in order to post your level. If those screens aren't there, we just can't post your level. Fixing this little problem is as easy as loading up your level or mod, taking 2 screenshots, and resubmitting it - so please do! I can't wait to see more levels sitting in my inbox... honest! :)

GameSpy Arcade Supports Jedi Knight! - darkjedi86 @ 2:36 PM
Well, since I live under a rock, I did not even know there was such a thing as GameSpy Arcade. That is, until Mara Jade was kind enough to give me a news tip. I downloaded it, installed it, and tried it. It's really something else. You can play games, chat, surf, and more; and now it supports Jedi Knight! So, if you don't already have GameSpy Arcade, I would recommend going to their site and getting it. I'll see you there!

Description: This is a small multiplayer saber deathmatch level set in the city of Baron's Hed. The base of this level comes from level 6 from the single player game although it is heavily modified. This map is intended for FF as well as NF and 4 poeple max due to medium framerate which can result in poor performance on low end computers. There is 1 secret in the level that was suggested to me by a fellow tester. It is very hard to find.

It is not for discussion of your likes/dislikes of Oasis mods, it's not for discussion of the author's clan, it is not for posting "LOL!!!!!!!". It is for posting comments on the level itself. Please keep this in mind and only post if you have something relevant to say about the level.

The two mods I just posted are actually the same MOD, except one is for Jedi Knight and one is for Mysteries of the Sith. I just thought I'd clarify this in case some people got confused. Be warned, both mods weight in at a hefty 6.7 Megs!
New MotS Multiplayer Cog - blujay @ 1:03 AM
Flaming Monkey Trooper sent in his multiplayer MotS-only Self Destruct cog.
A switch activates a timer and sfx that when triggered kill all actors and players in any of 10 sectors. Displays who activated the timer. Has support for external effects through a trigger, allowing synching with other cogs.
He included a demo level, and also another cog that will kill all players in the level, instead of in just 10 sectors.

Description: There is really no reason to state where this level is placed. Am I right? This level was my first attempt at creating levels, and I am pleased with the results. It has many weapons, force boosts, and health regaining items to keep you going. The pitfalls are, of course, fatal, and you can watch your body disappearing into the "lava". There is also a Red tint to the level to give it a more "authentic" look.

PCGamer UK has posted a preview of Obi-Wan, apparently now being dubbed the next game in the Dark Forces series. Pretty strange considering the fact that originally, it wasn't going to be released as part of Dark Forces (and why should it be, it has no relation to the stories of Kyle Katarn). They've also got some new screenshots.

This week's mat spotlight features the Graphtallica2 mat pack. This mat pack, stuffed with 250 textures from the texture site Graphtallica, was converted by Ping_Me.

I would also like to point out that there have been no mat submissions in over a week. I know there are lots of mats out there, sitting on people's hard drives. So please, if you have a mat send it in and help out the Jedi Knight community.
