Level Design Resource Guide -
This is something I've been meaning to mention for a while now. If you're the person that originally tipped me off, I apologize for forgetting, so send me an email and I'll credit you. Anyway, Gamasutra has a very interesting new feature called the Level Design Resource Guide. It currently has 7 articles relating to level design. If you're a mapper, be sure to give all of these a thorough read. And if you're not a mapper, what are you waiting for? Get Jed and start learning!
Starfighter Postmortem -
Gamasutra has posted another interesting postmortem, this time for LucasArts' Star Wars: Starfighter. A postmortem Gamasutra-style is basically an article written by someone who was actually on the development team for the game (usually one of the leads). They generally discuss what went right and what went wrong during the development cycle. Anyway, check it out right here.

Star Wars Gaming -
Blue's News posted a ton of links to Star Wars gaming related material this morning. This Gamesmania previews page has previews of most of the upcoming SW games including Jedi Outcast. Gamespot has some Battlegrounds screenshots. Finally, IGN has posted 5 new JK2: Jedi Outcast screenshots. Is it just me or do those storm troopers still look like they're made out of marshmellows?

Server Move - URGENT -
The Massassi Temple is in the process of moving to another server within ReconGamer but in another data center. The hard drive was mirrored last night (Sunday night), so any changes/updates made between then and the time the new server comes online will be lost. This means that any EC updates, forum posts, level ratings/comments/downloads won't be reflected on the new server. You are welcome to post things, just know that they will not show up on the new server (you will have to re-post them).
Due to this fact, we will not be updating levels/mods until the server move is complete (hopefully by Tuesday).

Introducing: GalacticBattles.com -
GalacticBattles.com is a new site dedicated to the upcoming Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, a real-time strategy game in the works over at Lucasarts. To kick things off, check out this welcome letter written by Gary Gaber, director of the game.
GalacticBattles.com is the first joint-effort between the LucasGames Network, MixnMojo.com, and The Massassi Temple. More information on this partnership will be released as time goes on, but don't be surprised if links to those sites and their network pop up around here.

Jedi Knight II Preview -
JeffW of JediKnightII.net let me know that IGN has updated their preview with first-hand impressions of the game from a visit to Lucasarts. This is a great preview that has a lot of gameplay information - here's a snip, but be sure to go read the whole thing.
The objective of the development team was to capture the look and feel of the movies, and they've certainly portrayed it as accurately as we've ever seen in a game. Lightsabers leave trails as they flash through the air. Battles are fast and furious with Jedis blocking each other's strikes with amazing accuracy -- and poly-to-poly collision support means that the lightsabers hit exactly as they should when you're in the middle of a frenzied exchange, and also promise to cut down on those annoying clipping problems that we're so used to. There are also body-specific hits, so if you tag your opponent in the leg, he's likely to acquire a nasty limp -- that is if you don't cut the leg completely off, a fate we saw befall a few unlucky Stormtroopers who happened to get in Kyle's way.
Mat and 3do Downtime -
Tomorrow I'm heading out of town and I'll be gone for about three weeks. Since I'm the mat/3do poster, that means that there won't be any mats or 3dos uploaded during this time. You can still browse through the mat section or the 3dos, but new ones won't be uploading for at least three weeks. Keep in mind that you can still send in your mats/3dos, but you won't see them on the site for a while. See you in three weeks!

LucasArts Chat Transcript -
LucasArts has released the transcript of the chat they held yesterday with their president, Simon Jeffery. Here's something that I found interesting:
RAL_Thrawn: LucasArts seems to be trying to establish a better dialogue with the fan community. Are their plans to support editing communities for new releases such as Outcast and Galaxies? And even for games such as Jedi Knight and Mysteries of the Sith? There's also a few more questions/answers pertaining to Jedi Outcast so you may want to take a look.
Simon Jeffery: Thanks for noticing our new efforts with regard building and supporting our community. We appreciate everyone's enthusiasm. LucasArts is diligently working toward accommodating the desires of our fans to allow for a greater level of interaction with our Star Wars games and original titles. We can't provide any specific details right now, but you'll be hearing more about our plans very soon. We think you'll be happy when we roll out news about it.
DCM #84 -
Al MacDonald has updated his site with Dairy of a Crazed Mimbanite number 84. Thanks to BrianTheSith for the heads up.

New Jedi Knight Textures -
mop was kind enough to send in six mats which you can find in the stone/cement category in the mats section. All six of these mats are 16-bit and look great.
Millennium News -
Hideki sends word that his cog/mod site, Millennium, has been updated. Basically it's a redesign, a lot of behind-the-scenes functional changes, and some biography and plan updates. Be sure to pay Millennium a visit if cogging is your thing.
Editors of the Sith -
Editors of the Sith is a new editing group. We generally don't post news of new editing groups (you can add your link to our links section), but this one has an interesting set of JK-themed Magic cards in its download section. If this is the type of stuff that interests you, be sure to stop by.
JK Tournies -
Maybe individual tournaments like this will result in a renewed interest in playing on the Zone.
Shady_IJ is hosting a series of tournaments. They will be held in Tournament Room 1 at Zone.com and be called Fighting for the Iron Cup. They are all listed in order below.
7/25/01 10:30am Central Time
7/27/01 7:00pm Central Time
7/28/01 10:00am Central Time
If Shady is busy it will be hosted by another Iron Jedi member.

Massassi Level Contest #4 -
The Massassi Temple will shortly be posting rules and regulations for its final Jedi Knight Level Pack entitled MLP4 (Massassi Level Pack 4). As you may or may not know, this is a contest for JK multiplayer levels, the winners of which will be included in a level pack similiar to our other packs. Here are some basic rules so you can get started - a more detailed ruleset is forthcoming.
This will be the last Massassi Level Pack for Jedi Knight/MotS, and I look forward to seeing what all you editors come up with!
- JK Deathmatch Levels only (no ctf or other levels with modified gameplay)
- 8-bit mats only in the main pack - levels will be judged on 8-bit mats, but if enough people want it, we will release a 16-bit mat pack to overwrite the 8-bit mats (must be network-compatible which I think excludes skyboxes)
- No modifications to JK gameplay, weapons, skins, or models - this is a level contest, not a skin, model, or other type of contest
- Only new, non-released levels will be accepted - no modifications of LEC levels, either
- Deadline: probably about a month and a half from today - more details and a specific date later
- Judge information will be released on a later date
- No work derived from other games or levels will be accepted!

EC Reopened -
I have reopened the Editor's Corner. I want to make it clear that the EC is not an all-purpose image host. It is designed to give editors a place to display their work. It is not designed for pictures of friends and families, parodies of members of the JK community, desktop snapshots, or anything similar. It can be used to show off textures, models, maps, mods, and anything else editing related. Please note that it's perfectly acceptable to post work from other games as well (not just JK/MotS).
We will be closely monitoring the EC to ensure that these rules are followed. If you are found in violation, you will be banned. This ban will cover both the EC and the levels (ratings/comments) system. Please don't waste our time and yours by posting non-editing related images.

New Rbots Tutorial -
Here's the latest news from the original Rbot himself, Raynar:
There is now another tutorial available. This one details how to improve the bots' performance through better node placement, using the special path node system and using custom cogs. I've also created a contents page of all the tutorials to make finding what you need a little easier. Check it out here: http://rbots.massassi.net
